The first Scorpions team was created in July of 1998 at the South Middle School in Braintree. Recently hired at Braintree High School, Fred Marks wanted to improve the Braintree program by creating a local club that Braintree players could enter to advance their development.
Although located in close proximity to powerhouse South Coast Girls and other strong clubs like Sporting Cristale, KICS, Blazers, Crusaders and South Shore Select, the Scorpion teams soon dominated all local competition and statewide competition as well. Teams coached by Fred Marks and Ryan Puntiri soon won USYSA State Cups and many local tournaments.
Scorpions merged with South Coast Girls (Duxbury) and later with Elite Soccer Academy (Hopkinton). Scorpions were either first, or among the first, to hire full time club employees.
Many more State Cups were won, 5 Regional Championships and a National Championship 0-1 loss followed. Tournament Championships at National level tournaments including Jefferson Cup, WAGS, PDA, Disney, Players Cup etc. followed.
Many of the players on these teams entered HS and then college, becoming members of teams at Harvard, Boston College, UCLA, UMass-Amherst, Holy Cross, Boston University, Maryland, Northeastern, Providence, Coastal Carolina, Elon, etc..etc..
Scorpions Alum Samantha and Kristie Mewis have become members of the full US National team. Both Kristie and Sam were drafted in the top 5 of the NWSL in 2013 and 2015. Amy Caldwell, Lauren Berman and Mackenzie Meehan have also all participated with their U.S. Youth National Teams.
Around 2010, under club President Fred Marks, Scorpions became members of the nationally prestigious Elite Club National League (ECNL) and have been solid members of that league since.
Level of Play
Scorpions Soccer is fortunate and proud to have memberships in the two most prestigious youth soccer leagues in the United States, the Elite Club National League (ECNL) and the Elite Clubs Regional League (ECRL). All other Scorpions teams play in New England's top league, the New England Club Soccer League (NECSL).
The ECNL is both the most challenging youth soccer playing environment and the 'go to' college recruiting platform across the US. Playing in the ECNL is widely considered a stamp of approval for colleges. The ECNL showcases are swarming with college representation, the games are played at a very high level.
The ECRL is also a high level of play that is very well respected and the next best recruiting platform for colleges. Scorpions ECNL and ECRL teams travel together. Typically ECRL and ECNL teams have 5 home and 5 away weekends of league play and there will also be (4 games ECNL, 2 games NPL) played locally vs. other Massachusetts teams.
Scorpions Soccer is also happy to enter our 'Regional' teams ('East' of Boston (Braintree) and Metrowest of Boston) in the NECSL. The NECSL has become an institution in New England with membership being prized. It is a great home with excellent competition for our teams for many years now and many players on these teams will play in college.
Scorpions team selection goes in this order:
ECNL (top 16-22)
ECRL (next 16-22)
NECSL Regional teams (Navy, Green, White).
ECNL and ECRL teams train in areas central to the (North, South, West) Regions to accommodate players from multiple areas.
Regional teams train in areas within their geographic region.
Players can, and are, moved up when they demonstrate both interest and ability for a higher level. High level teams often invite players from other Scorpions' teams to fill in for injuries/absences as well.
