Scorpions Spotlight is proud to announce Regan Slaney has been named Spotlight Goalkeeper of the Month for April! Regan's 2012 ECNL-RL South team currently has a 4W 7D 1L record and has conceded a league-low 10 goals in 12 matches played, and her masterful play in goal has been instrumental in their success.

Regan sat down for an exclusive interview with Spotlight to commemorate her achievement.

What is your current club team?

I currently play for the Scorpions 2012 girls ECNL-RL South team.

When did you start playing soccer?

I started playing soccer at four years old.

What’s your favorite thing about soccer on the field?

My favorite thing about soccer on the field is the feeling after making a great save.

How and when did you decide to specialize in playing goal?

I started playing goalkeeper when I was about eight years old. I was the only player on my team who wasn’t afraid of the ball coming straight at my face, so I stepped into goal and it just stuck, which later led me to specialize in the position.

Can you tell us your favorite soccer memory (on field or off)?

One of my favorite soccer memories was helping my team win the Jefferson Cup this year by saving multiple PKs in both the semifinals and finals.

What qualities do you have that make you a strong keeper?

Some qualities that make me a strong goalkeeper are that I play aggressively, I am not afraid of the ball, and I read the field well. I have a lot of grit. I also put in work off the field by practicing on my own, watching film, and reflecting on how I can improve.

What areas of the game do you need to work on?

One area I’m working to improve is catching the ball cleanly and limiting rebounds.

What’s your favorite team?

My favorite team is the United States women’s national soccer team. They are the best in the world.

Who is your favorite player?

My favorite female player is Hope Solo because of her confidence and aggressiveness in the goal.

What are your long term soccer goals?

My long-term goals are to continue improving as a player, play soccer in college, and see how far I can go.

Scorpions Spotlight is happy to announce Rhode Island Coach Emily DeRoehn has been named Coach of the Month! Behind her leadership, Coach Emily's teams are off to strong starts in the NECSL spring season.

Spotlight asked Coach Emily to tell us about her soccer history:

COACH EMILY:

Hi, my name is Emily DeRoehn, and I am a first-year coach with Rhode Island 2016 girls Black, Rhode Island 2016 girls White, and Rhode Island 2007/2008 girls Black.

I am from Old Lyme, CT, and I began playing soccer when I was just 3 years old. I was a very shy kid, and the soccer field quickly became the place where I was most confident. I played town, club, and eventually college soccer at Johnson and Wales University, where I was a four-time First Team All-Conference selection, three-time All-Region selection, two-time USC All-American, USC Academic All-American, and the 2024/2025 GNAC Female Athlete of the Year. I also played semi-professional soccer with the Rhode Island Rogues Futbol Club. But now that I've bragged too much, I can honestly say that soccer has shaped me into the person I am today, and I firmly believe that my coaches’ impact on my life has been immeasurable. Now I’m grateful for the opportunity to try and return the favor.

Being a 23-year-old female coach puts me in a very unique and influential position that I understand the weight of. Young female athletes are able to relate to me as their coach in ways they normally can’t, as soccer coaches are predominantly male. I know my players consider me a role model, and that is not something I take lightly. I love the game and hope I can build that same love for my players, but ultimately I just want to teach them that it's cool to be a confident, competitive, and tough woman.

The 2016 girls Black team got off to a pretty rocky start in the fall. We were learning our team identity, and I was learning to be a coach for the very first time. Our transformation from the fall to now has been so drastic and enjoyable to watch. In the winter, we played in a U10 indoor boys league, where we went undefeated, greatly improving our confidence and team chemistry. We also won the 2026 Seacoast Showcase, a challenge that demonstrated a new level of tenacity and resilience from our girls and marked our first tournament victory with this group.

Going into the spring season, our roster has grown so much. We have added an additional 2016 team and look forward to providing each individual player with plenty of game experience and opportunities for improvement. I am so proud of the ongoing determination from this group, but more importantly, the teamwork, kindness, and support they all show each other.

The 2007/2008 girls have been a completely different challenge. These players are toward the end of their club soccer journey, with some facing the exciting yet daunting task of the college soccer recruitment process. As someone with recent experience, I’m able to be a resource during this time. I have loved coaching this group and getting to implement more difficult drills and concepts, not only challenging the players but also myself as a coach. As these players enter the next stage of their careers, I hope to help them with their preparedness to play at the next level, not only in terms of technical and tactical skill, but also mentality.

I feel very lucky for the opportunity to work with these female athletes at different yet crucial points of their soccer journey, as I’m fortunate to share my passions while simultaneously learning as much from my players as they do from me.

2026 Scorpions Futsal League wraps

SCORPIONS SC FUTSAL LEAGUE WRAPS

The third season of Scorpions Soccer Futsal League wrapped with a Finals Night Tuesday at CCRI in Lincoln, RI, with five championships decided on the evening. This year twenty-four teams and over 180 players competed both on the courts and with Mother Nature, as this winter's storms wreaked havoc on the schedule.

The 2012/13 Premiership saw the Scorpions 2012 Boys ECNL team defeat the 2013 Boys ECNL in a tight 6-5 final. The 2012/13 Championship final pitted NEFC 2012 Boys Navy South against Scorpions 2013 MW Boys Black, where MetroWest avenged their only loss of the season with a 3-1 victory in the final.

The 2014/15 Premiership final saw Scorpions 2015 ECNL Z defeat Scorpions 2015 ECNL RL team 2-1 to earn their medals. The 2014/15 Championship division saw the Scorpions 2014 MW Boys defeat last year's champs 2015 MW Franklin Girls 6-1 to secure the title. And finally the 2015 MW White team defeated 2016 Rhode Island boys 6-1 to secure the title.

Congratulations to all the teams, and thanks for a great season!

Scorpions S hine in the Sunshine State

Scorpions SC kicked off 2026 in impressive fashion, competing at ECNL Florida. The club sent five girls teams to the Sunshine State to showcase their skills against many of the best clubs from across the country.

Between National and Regional, over 450 college coaches gathered to watch players compete at the ECNL Florida showcases in Lakewood Ranch and Sanford.

“Florida was a great event for our players - we not only competed well, but we performed and showcased to the best of our ability in front of hundreds of college coaches,” Scorpions SC DOC Evan Burokas said. “These showcase games can be very tricky. Some teams we face are at the height of their season after playing 15+ games together, whereas our players have only played 3-4 games prior to attending. Despite that challenge, our girls handled the games very well across the entire weekend and also played some attractive soccer along the way.”

2010 ECNL National Girls

Coach Kevin Mascary’s U16 side had a rough start to the weekend, suffering a heavy defeat to an Atlanta Fire United squad that would go on to finish second in the showcase table.

“Showcases feel more intense because we’re playing new teams and players we’ve never seen,” fullback/midfielder Hailey Rollins said. “[Playing against strong competition] reminded me how important it is to stay focused because small details can make a huge difference at this level.”

While the first outing didn’t go as expected, the remaining performances highlighted the team’s resilience and strength, as they fine-tuned the small details Rollins referenced.

“I am so proud of [my team] for being able to persevere through [a rough first performance],” goalkeeper Greyson Helie said. “I would definitely pride our defense as one of the strengths of our team, so that [first game] was an outlier for us.”

Those words rang true in Scorpions SC’s subsequent games. The 2010s team rebounded nicely with a 3-0 victory over Jacksonville FC and a 0-0 draw against Washington Premier.

“We had hoped to win all of our games going into the showcase,” midfielder Maeve Soden said. “We had a disappointing first game, but I am very proud of my teammates for how we responded, playing two much more competitive games after [the loss].”

Scorpions SC’s 2010 ECNL National side finished the weekend 1-1-1, which saw it place 43rd in an 80-team table. Regardless of standings, each player emphasized how proud they were of their team’s showing.

“Our goal was to come out of the showcase with confidence, which I think we accomplished,” Rollins said. “I'm proud of how our team competed, and it motivated me to keep working hard and getting better.”

As Rollins alluded to, the players also found out a lot about themselves at this prestigious event.

“The one thing I will take away from this showcase is to trust myself,” Helie said. “I know that I am stronger than I believe, and I will always have room to improve, but if I don't have faith in my own abilities, how should I expect my teammates to trust me? My position requires confidence and leadership qualities for my team to thrive, so that is what I will provide.”

Overall, it was an unforgettable weekend for the U16s in Lakewood Ranch.

“It was truly an amazing experience, and I am so grateful that I got the chance to play against such good competition and in front of so many coaches,” Soden said.

2009 ECNL National Girls

For Coach Andre Reis and his 2009 squad, one of the main goals at ECNL Florida was building chemistry, a point emphasized before the showcase .

“Since we had added new players and had only played one game together prior to ECNL Florida, the main goal was to build chemistry, adjust to playing with one another, and, of course, showcase our team to the best of our ability,” centerback Olivia Umina said.

The defender went on to say she believes the team met those prerequisites, which is an understatement. The 2009 squad’s first match in Lakewood Ranch ended in a 4-0 victory over FC Wisconsin .

“The most important quality our Scorpions team has is teamwork — nobody is alone on the field. If one player is one-on-one versus an attacker, there's always another player behind them willing to step in if they need help. This is what makes our team so special.”

Goalkeeper Isabella Alcantara echoed these sentiments, praising the team’s composure and togetherness on numerous occasions.

“We all worked together, and after experiencing a lot of adversity previously, it felt like we got out of it,” Alcantara said. “We are finally coming together, and it's showing on the field with our hard work. Our team has clicked in a way it never has before.”

The rest of the weekend brought with it a 1-1 draw against NCFC and a narrow 1-0 defeat to WNY Flash. These results saw the U17s finish in the top half of the table with a plus-3 goal differential.

“I think the key to our defensive success is collective responsibility, mentality and decision-making,” Umina said. “Even though we want to control possession, everyone on the field understands their role defensively, especially in transition moments. Coach Reis always says that when we lose the ball, the first thing that should come to mind is get it back. As a team, I think this mentality is what helps us most in maintaining possession.”

All in all, the 2009s netted six goals and let in just three across the weekend. Forward/midfielder Analise Pinto believes patience and maturity played a large role in the team’s goalscoring output at ECNL Florida.

“We have been working on moving the ball, keeping possession, and resetting in high-pressure situations, and this was key for us [at ECNL Florida],” Pinto said. “Learning how to create chances off counters and overall build-up play was [an area] we grew in. We were able to create offensive chances throughout each game, and the next step is putting away as many as we can to get the results we are looking for. I know we can do this, and I am excited to see our hard work pay off this season.”

Pinto isn’t the only player who believes the U17s have set a solid foundation for the season ahead. Overall, the team is brimming with confidence.

“I believe this season ahead will be great,” Alcantara said. “We have very high expectations as a team, and I believe our goals can be met if we keep up with them.”

2007/08 ECNL National Girls

The showcase results took a backseat to the bittersweet feelings for one U19 player.

“ECNL Florida 2026 was definitely a memorable experience for me,” left back and midfielder Meg Vieira said. “It was my first time back playing after tearing my ACL. It was a full-circle moment for me because I was playing exactly one year later, in the same place that I’d been when I tore my ACL. I am so grateful for everybody who helped and supported me during my recovery, and I felt like I owed it to them to give it my all.”

Vieira noted that a motivating factor throughout her recovery process was getting to retake the pitch in Lakewood Ranch. The versatile U19 player was named as one of Scorpions SC’s standout performers, and she cannot help but feel as if her play set the tone for what’s to come.

“I wanted to prove to everybody that this injury made me stronger, and I feel like I accomplished that. I did better than I thought I would. Playing at ECNL Florida helped my confidence and set me up for success for the rest of the season.”

Coach Mascary emphasized his desire to get results at ECNL Florida in the buildup to the showcase. While his ‘07/08 side finished with one win and two losses, the team feels good about its performances.

“Even though we didn’t get all of the perfect results, [ECNL Florida] was a step in the right direction for this season,” Vieira said.

There are particularly positive things to take away from Scorpions’ second match of the showcase, a 3-2 victory over Sporting Blue Valley. This performance followed a weekend-opening defeat, and the resilience is being celebrated within the squad.

“We played some tough games, but they helped us become a better team. We’ve been training hard, and everybody should be really proud of how they played. I think this season is going to be great, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

2009 ECNL Regional Girls

Scorpions SC took Sanford by storm at the ECNL Florida showcase. Coach Scott Bessette’s side was one of only 12 teams in the bracket to take all nine points over the weekend.

“We worked well as a team and were consistent in our level of play,” defender Brooke Carter said. “We stayed strong throughout the tournament and got better every day. We finished in the top three, which is our strongest [finish] yet, and I am so incredibly proud of our team.”

As Carter alluded to, Scorpions’ U17 regional squad was able to finish third of 84 competing teams at ECNL Florida due to its exceptional goalscoring output. The side found the back of the net a whopping 13 times across three matches, only conceding twice.

“The showcase environment creates a great opportunity to display both team play and individual skills in front of college coaches, which I feel pushes me to play with confidence, focus, and urgency,” forward Phoebe Cuneo said. “I am always striving to help create opportunities and score goals, and I was happy with my contributions at this tournament.”

Bessette’s team — similar to others — had limited time to gel ahead of this tournament because of the high school calendar. However, traveling to Florida helped create a meaningful connection among the players.

“Traveling for ECNL events brings great team bonding experiences, which strengthen our chemistry both on and off the field,” Cuneo said. “I love the bonding opportunities at showcases like this. A nice bonus was that while exploring Sanford with my teammates, I found my new favorite ice cream flavor.”

The strong showing at ECNL Florida has this tight-knit group excited for what the remainder of the season holds. However, both Carter and Cuneo emphasized the squad’s hunger for continued improvement.

“It was a great experience for my team, and we had a lot of fun and grew together,” Carter said. “It was a great weekend. I can’t wait for the next tournament!”

2007/08 ECNL Regional Girls

A pair of 1-1 draws bookended the ‘07/08 regional team’s weekend. Coach Bob Meals and his players stressed the importance of growth as a squad over results at this early-season showcase.

“The individual talent on this team is clear, but what stands out most is how connected we are becoming,” centerback Elise Modracek said. “Even with new teammates, those connections are growing quickly, and I’m excited to see how we continue to progress together as the season goes on.”

Nevertheless, after picking up just two points, there are areas in which the team can tighten up. Modracek believes this boils down to game management, especially as the final whistle nears.

“When we connected simple passes with few touches in between, we broke down teams effectively. The games we should've won this weekend were either tied or lost in the last 10 minutes of the match due to poor decision-making. Learning to collectively stay composed and make smarter decisions at the end of games is something we can build on moving forward.”

Despite finishing within the bottom half of the table at ECNL Florida, Meals’ team looks forward to displaying its abilities on the biggest stages in the future.

“The ECNL showcase environment definitely elevates my performance,” attacker Ella Sheehan said. “Competing on a bigger stage with such a high level of competition motivates me to push myself to my highest standard. It drives me not only to perform well individually, but also to do everything I can to contribute to my team’s success. I know that everyone at these ECNL matches is there for similar goals, which helps elevate performances and energy.”

ECNL Florida was another monumental milestone for Scorpions SC. Each team relished the opportunity to display its hard work and talent for college coaches and spectators, while also competing at the highest level and building chemistry with one another.

Preview : Scorpions Girls Take on ECNL Florida Showcase

Scorpions Soccer Club returns to the Sunshine State this weekend for more ECNL Florida showcase action. Five girls national and regional teams will take the pitch for the first time in 2026 from Lakewood Ranch and Sanford, Florida.

These prestigious events allow teams to put their hard work to the test and find out how they stack up against elite competition from across the United States. Each bracket contains dozens of the most talented teams from across the country. The ECNL Florida showcases will also act as an exhibit for players, with hundreds of college coaches expected to attend.

“The Florida ECNL Girls event is always one of our biggest priorities for the year,” Scorpions SC Director of Coaching Evan Burokas said. “It checks every box we want when we think about giving our players the best possible exposure in front of a range of college coaches.”

“We have a great group of teams and staff heading to Florida,” Scorpions SC Girls Director Nick Rugnetta said. “It’s always great to see so many teams competing and the atmosphere on game day is like nothing else. There is excellent togetherness within our staff and support for our teams — no more so than weekends like this.”

2010 ECNL National Girls

Coach Kevin Mascary echoed Burokas’ words in regard to the ECNL Florida showcase. He views the event as a great test that brings with it important exposure. Despite the challenge, he believes his team is ready thanks to depth in both attacking and defensive areas of the pitch. “ Quinn Dwomoh and Hannah Slavin are looking to power the offense, while Maeve Monaghan and Kyla Walton have been standout defensive players for the group,” Mascary said.

Mascary will be looking for players who can embrace responsibility early in the competition, through competitiveness, consistency under pressure or leadership. He made a note of three players he believes can display these traits at ECNL Florida: Mia DeLuca who operates the centrally, Hailey Rollins who plays outside midfield, and Savannah Ryan who can create or score in the attacking third.

“We want to see improved consistency, decision-making, and confidence as a group. A successful showcase, in our eyes, is measured by strong performances, progress from one game to the next, and players showcasing themselves well for the next level.”

Mascary’s side begins play against Atlanta Fire United at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday from Premier Sports Campus. “Our 2010s team is coming off a solid run in Champions League last year with a top two finish in conference, so they’re definitely one to keep an eye on down in the Sunshine State,” Burokas said.

2009 ECNL National Girls

The U17 National Girls squad has only played one ECNL match since the high school season concluded, so Coach Andre Reis views this event as an opportunity to build cohesion and chemistry among the team. “I will be looking for [us to grow] our ability and comfort in possession,” Reis said. “Having the ability to possess the ball through the thirds to create goal-scoring chances is where we want to get to.”

Reis maintains that a successful ECNL event allows every player the freedom and opportunity to showcase themselves. He named three players from the Class of 2028 who have the potential to step up at this showcase: forwards Anna Allard and Lauryn Mulvaney, as well as midfielder Catherine Chow .

“I will be looking for positive performances: playing well on both sides of the ball, possessing with a purpose, creating quality goal-scoring chances, pressing high up the field whenever possible and being disciplined defensively when defending deep.”

Two players who will undoubtedly help the team achieve their tactical goals are versatile midfielders Donnelle Balunos and Stetson commit Kenley Fletcher. Reis describes Balunos and Fletcher as true box-to-box midfielders who cover a ton of ground — both in and out of possession — thanks to their relentless work rates.

“The 2009s are a mix of both [committed and uncommitted players],” Burokas said. “Some are looking to narrow their options, while other younger players amongst the group are looking to maximize exposure and maintain traction amongst current college programs.”

Goalkeeper Marielle Nassiff , recently committed to Holy Cross brings composure, athleticism, and leadership to every match. Known for her all-round play and confident presence which gives her team a sense of calmness between the pipes.

Last but not least, Reis believes uncommitted attacking midfielder/forward Analise Pinto will draw a lot of attention in Florida. He believes Pinto’s ability to take defenders on, her finishing with both feet and her pace will help her stand out among the crowd. “Although we would love to get results, the [individual] performance heavily outweighs the result of the games, especially at a showcase and at this stage of the season,” Reis said. Reis’ team is slated to be one of the first U17 sides to kick off on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET versus FC Wisconsin.

2009 ECNL Regional Girls

Coach Scott Bessette is hoping to see growth in key areas, namely finishing, after failing to capitalize on opportunities last time out. “We came away with a goalless draw in our last ECNL league match, despite generating a number of quality scoring opportunities,” Bessette said. “Improving our efficiency in the final third is a key area of focus.”

Two individuals who can help in that regard are 2024-25 ECNL All-Regional Team selections Ella McDonald and Laila Rosen. McDonald is set to represent Scorpions in the Continental Tire ECNL Regional League Selection Game at ECNL Florida. She is the team’s leading scorer, thought of as an elite finisher who plays with composure and speed. Bessette also describes Rosen as a flourishing forward/attacking midfielder who commands attention with her ability to connect play and knack for creating chances.

“From a team perspective, we want to see continued growth in our decision-making, tempo, and ability to control matches in key moments.” It’s not all about dominance in the final third with the 2009 ECNL Regional Girls, either. Bessette believes he truly has two of the best players in the New England region anchoring his defense in goalkeeper Ciara O’Driscoll and 2024-25 ECNL All-Regional team centerback Emery Carr .

“Individually, we are looking for players to show confidence, composure, and leadership in their roles. These events have the best way of bringing out the competitive spirit in our players.” Bessette says that playing in such high-pressure showcases allows his players to put their character and talent on display against some of the best in the country. He’s looking for forward/winger Ava Quintin , central midfielder Ellen Robbins and fullback Sophea Souza to raise their levels and impress spectators at ECNL Florida.

“A successful showcase, in our eyes, is one where we see clear progression in our tactics and playing abilities, as well as a strong collective performance by the team and individual players showcasing their talents for the college scouts.” The 2009 ECNL Regional Girls take on Pride SC to begin the showcase at noon ET on Friday, Jan. 9, from Seminole Soccer Complex.

2007/08 ECNL National Girls

Mascary — who also manages the 2010 ECNL National Girls — is eager to see results from his U19 side, aiming to leave the showcase with a winning record. “Showcases highlight who can adapt and perform over multiple games. Some [players who I expect to step up at ECNL Florida] are Dani Johnson, Tatum O’Brien, Natalie Stouch and Kate Sullivan .”

Kambryl Armstrong and Anya Tansil in attack, as well as Sidney Heavey and Mirabelle Kesselman in defense, were also named key contributors by Mascary. He expects those girls to play a big role at the esteemed showcase. “We’re excited to see how the players represent themselves, the team and the club.” Burokas notes that while most of the U19 team is already committed to play collegiate soccer, this showcase represents the last big opportunity for the few still looking to seal the deal in front of college coaches. Mascary’s squad gets play underway in Florida at noon ET on Saturday against Richmond United.

2007/08 ECNL Regional Girls

Scorpions SC U19 ECNL Regional Girls coach Bob Meals views the showcase as an exciting opportunity to connect with his players, specifically the new roster additions, both on and off the pitch. “We are looking to continue building success in our 1-4-1-4-1 formation,” Meals said. “As a team, we aim to play a positional, penetration-focused style in the attack while maintaining a disciplined mid-block defensively. Keeping our midfield five compact to deny central passing lanes and force opponents wide — where we can double — is a key focus.”

Integral to these tactical aspirations are midfielders Ella Sheehan and Bella Wen . The former’s stamina allows her to impact both phases of play and win one-on-one challenges. Meanwhile, the latter is a superb on-ball attacking mid capable of playing inch-perfect passes in behind the defense to forwards, such as Isabella Cavalini , who make staple penetrating runs.

“We would like to see improved attacking runs in behind back lines to better utilize our pace up top and create space for midfield possession when needed.” Despite emphasizing the importance of attacking improvements, Meals couldn’t say enough about the defensive shifts his squad puts in. He showed excitement about physical centerbacks Elise Modracek and Anna O’Connor . Meals also made it a point to shout out winger Lilah Aufiero’s hard work defending in a mid-block, which complements her on-ball abilities perfectly out wide.

“A successful tournament, first and foremost, is our uncommitted players showcasing their abilities in front of college programs they are interested in attending. When the team plays well collectively, individual success often follows.” Meals’ side opens play against Maryland United at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, at Sylvan Lake Park.

ECNL Florida runs from Saturday, Jan. 10, through Monday, Jan. 12, in Lakewood Ranch. Similarly, ECNL Regional League Florida will begin on Friday, Jan. 9, and conclude on Sunday, Jan. 11, in Sanford. Showcase matches are available to live stream throughout the weekend here .

Preview : Boys ECNL Kick-off 2026 at ECNL Florida Showcase

Scorpions SC rings in the new year from Lakewood Ranch and Seminole Park, with boys teams participating in ECNL Florida showcase events.

“Any time you head into a major showcase early in the season, it highlights both strengths and areas that still need work,” Scorpions SC Boys Director Correy Couch said. “The key focus will be conditioning and match fitness, as we need to be able to play 80 minutes of high-tempo, high-quality soccer.”

The showcase presents each squad with a unique opportunity to put its hard work to the test early in the campaign against top competition from across the United States.

“You are facing not only some of the most technically gifted players in the country, but also some of the best overall athletes,” Couch said. “The games are faster-paced, more physical and more demanding. When you combine that athleticism with high-level technical ability, it really highlights how challenging and competitive the ECNL platform is.”

Scorpions SC will be represented by four teams in Florida, with the U19 ECNL National, U19 ECNL Regional, U17 ECNL National and U16 ECNL National sides all in action. “Our U19 ECNL National and ECNL Regional teams have looked very strong throughout preseason, and we are hoping to see both sides come away with winning records at the showcase,” Couch said.

“The U19 ECNL National team has a very talented central midfielder in Samuel Ospina , who was part of the NEPSAC championship-winning Mount Saint Charles team. For the U19 ECNL Regional team, Cristiano Rodrigues has had a phenomenal fall season with his high school and comes in as a high school all-star striker. Both Samuel and Cristiano have also been selected to participate in their ECNL All-Star and ECNL RL All-Star games, which speaks volumes about their quality.”

Whereas the attack and midfield are the areas to watch for the U19 teams, Couch believes all eyes will be on the defense when the 2008/09 ECNL team takes the pitch.

“Our U17 ECNL Boys feature a very strong centerback in Camilo Ramirez , who has recently been on trial in Spain,” Couch said. “We are excited to have Camilo back with Scorpions for the ECNL showcase.”

Meanwhile, the U16 ECNL will debut a new-look front-line in the upcoming campaign. “We’ve added some real attacking strength this offseason with Cameron George, Michael Fernandez and Damian Monteiro , who will complement the very talented Cal Holmes up front,” Couch said. “We are excited to see how the group performs together during their ECNL showcase games.”

Scorpions SC has an abundance of talent on display this weekend, but the focus remains on the group every time the teams take the pitch. “The coaching staff will be looking to the team captains to help drive standards on the field, setting the tone physically, mentally, and emotionally throughout each match,” Couch said. “We will judge success by how well the boys perform across all four key areas of the game: physically, mentally, technically, and tactically. We want to see if we can compete at a high level, control the tempo of matches, and consistently create goal-scoring opportunities.”

At the end of the day, the club realizes the privilege it has to compete on such a prestigious stage. “It’s a huge honor to be part of these showcases, and I wish all of the boys the very best,” Couch said. “I am extremely proud of our players, staff, and the overall progress we’ve made as a program. These events give us a tremendous opportunity to positively impact the futures of our players, with so many college coaches in attendance watching them compete.”

Scorpions SC begins play in The Sunshine State on Friday, Jan. 2, with the 2007/08 ECNL Regional side taking on Fort Lauderdale United FC. Kickoff is slated for noon ET from Seminole Soccer Complex Stadium. Showcase matches are available via live stream throughout the weekend here.

Scorpions SC coaches work hard to ensure their players develop in a fun, enriching environment. October's Coach of the Month Damari Mundell exemplifies this standard well, leading his teams in MetroWest and Central to a combined 10-1-3 NECSL record.

Spotlight asked Coach Damari to tell us about his soccer history:

COACH DAMARI:

Hello! My name is Damari Mundell and I am currently the head coach of the Metrowest Girls 2014 Black, and Central Girls 2013 white Team.

I’m originally from Birmingham, England, and I’ve been playing soccer since I was about three years old. I started out with a local academy team in my area and quickly fell in love with the game—the friendships, the competition, and simply the joy of playing. In 2013, when I was around ten I moved to the United States. Adjusting to a new country and lifestyle was challenging at first, but once I found a group of friends who shared my passion for soccer, I began to feel at home again. Since moving, I’ve been based in Auburn, I played for Saint John’s High School in shrewsbury and played club soccer for FC Bolts. Later, I had the incredible opportunity to return to England for university and to play for an academy/semi-professional team. The experiences I’ve had both in the U.S. and the U.K. have shaped not only my love for the game but also my perspective as a player and coach.

I started coaching about a year after moving back in 2023, and I haven’t stopped since. Stepping into a coaching role was definitely something new for me in the beginning, and like any new journey, it came with its challenges and learning curves. Over time, though, I discovered just how rewarding it can be to help others grow both on and off the field. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to coach such amazing individuals who continuously inspire me with their energy, and unique personalities!

My 2014 group I’ve been with for the past 2 years. We are currently 4-2-1 this Fall, third place in the NECSL this season. Watching the growth and development of this team has been incredibly rewarding. It’s cool to see the progress they’ve made and how our hard work in training sessions is translating into their performances on the field. Over the course of the season, their understanding of the game has improved a lot. The concepts and elements we’ve been focusing on are really beginning to click, and it’s exciting to see the team getting stronger and more confident with each passing week.

I recently took over coaching the 2013 group this past season, and we’ve had a strong start with a current record of 6-1-0 this Fall. This is a newly formed team, and while I was initially unsure of how we would perform, especially since some of the players were still developing their understanding and structure of the game. I’ve embraced the challenge of strengthening both their tactical awareness and technical abilities, and I’ve already seen tremendous growth across the group. This is a very talented and driven team, and our goal is to continue building momentum so we can keep progressing through the NECSL flights.

Overall, I am grateful to work for a club with players that at first were just players to me, but overtime building something more than a relationship, and making soccer fun but challenging. The players that I work with, make what I do so much better! Parents being able to not only trust me but helping me out each season. My goal is to provide every player with the opportunity to work hard, challenge themselves to reach their highest potential, and, most importantly, create that lasting love for the game. This sport has given me countless opportunities throughout my life, and being able to give back to the next generation of athletes is rewarding. All three groups have had an excellent start to the season, and I look forward to seeing their continued growth and development as the year progresses.

"Will faced a tough stretch earlier this season, battling a dip in confidence," said Scorpions Boys ECNL Director Correy Couch. "Through focused coaching, hard work, and perseverance, he’s rediscovered his belief and composure in goal. His growth over this hump shows that true development isn’t just about saves — it’s about resilience, mindset, and passion for the game."

WD: When I was 2 or 3 in Soccer Shots in Hershey, PA

SS: What’s your favorite thing about soccer on the field?

WD: Saving shots.

SS: How and when did you decide to specialize in playing goal?

WD: When I was playing for another club and I met coach Ash and he started coaching me. I wanted to be a keep because I thought it was fun.

SS: Can you tell us your favorite soccer memory (on field or off)?

WD: Playing hide and seek tag with my team at the SUSA tournament in that humungous hotel.

SS: What qualities do you have that make you a strong keeper?

WD: I am good at communicating, I have good leg strength, I’m quick and agile.

SS: What areas of the game do you need to work on?

WD: Communicating after I pass from the back and directing my teammates.

SS: What’s your favorite team?

CAM MULLINS-- SPOTLIGHT SEPTEMBER COACH OF THE MONTH

Scorpions MetroWest Girls Director Cam Mullins has been rolling on the sidelines. His three regional teams compiled a 12-3-2 record in September, with all of them in first place in their respective divisions. In recognition of their efforts, Coach Cam has been named Spotlight Coach of the Month for September!

"Coach Cam works so hard," said MetroWest Director Correy Couch. "As the Girls Director he has lots of responsibilities running the region, but he doesn't let that affect his dedication on the sidelines. His teams are working hard, improving and finding success."

Spotlight asked Coach Cam to tell us a little about his soccer history.

From Coach Cam:

Hi! My name is Cam Mullins and I am currently the head coach of the MetroWest Girls 2011 Black, MetroWest Girls 2015 Black, and MetroWest 2016 Boys Black team.

I am from Norfolk, MA; growing up right here in our MetroWest region for Scorpions. I have been around the game of soccer my whole life; from playing locally with the town of Norfolk when I first moved here, to then playing with my best friends at King Philip High School, and eventually having the opportunity to play in college.

I first began coaching when I was 16 years old, offering to help assist with my younger sister’s town team in Norfolk. I also had the opportunity to work with the Lil’ Kickers program at Forekicks in Norfolk in high school. Throughout college, I would work various local and non-local soccer camps, and this is when I truly gained my love for coaching the game; as much as I loved playing the game.

I am now in my third year of coaching with Scorpions. All three of the teams I oversee are in different stages of time working together; now being in my third season with the 2011 girls group, second season with the 2015 girls group, and finally just one month now with the 2016 boys group.

The 2011 group has now entered the high school age group, but we have a great group of players this Fall playing together who are still in eighth grade. We’re currently 2-0-1 this Fall, currently in first place in our flight in the NECSL. Seeing the progress this group has made over the past 3 years and now week-in and week-out brings me a lot of joy to see. One of the goals of this group is to prepare the rest of these players to be ready for the jump to high school next year, where they no longer may be playing against players who are their same age. Over the first few games of the season, it’s been great to see the increase in their game awareness; players are moving off the ball, communicating with each other, and playing at a level that has me excited for the rest of the Fall, and when we have our additional players return from their high school season.

The 2015 group has also had a great start to the Fall season, where we are currently 3-1, but also are at the top of our flight in the NECSL. When I took over the group last year, I was unsure how I would fare; as I had never coached a team that young before. But the energy and passion for the game these players possess made it a very easy transition. Over the past two seasons, we have been working very hard to continuously improve and refine our fundamental skills and abilities, while also expanding their ability to think and play like top level players. We had our first exposure to playing 9v9 at the beginning of the season, playing in the Seacoast Labor Day Tournament. We had a great start to the tournament, going 3-0 in the group stage but unfortunately lost in the finals! With the transition to 9v9, many of the girls are playing in new positions and roles that they may not have had during our first year playing 7v7. Their attitudes to improving and learning new responsibilities is inspiring, and I enjoy every interaction I have with this group.

Taking over the 2016 group is an exciting experience so far, being my first time coaching a boys team here in the MetroWest. The boys have had an awesome start to the season! We started the season making the finals at the Seacoast Labor Day tournament and are now 2-0 in our NECSL play. With just over a month of working with the group so far, seeing some of the progress this group has made in the short-term has been great! This is a very talented group of individuals, and we’re working very hard now to use our teammates more. My main message to this group has emphasized the importance of using our teammates to play, and the progress over the last month has me very excited for the rest of the year!

Overall, I am very grateful to work for a club and with players that are growing up in the same communities that I was a part of growing up. Now as director of our MetroWest girls region, I recently had the opportunity to invite many of our players to participate in a morning with TOPS Soccer at King Philip High School. This was a program that I had the opportunity to be a part of growing up and we had a great turnout of Scorpions players last week! Being able to provide a fun morning of soccer and games, and provide support for our community, makes it so great to work for a club and with such wonderful players who are willing to give back to their community.

All of the players I work with, make what I do so much better! I’m very thankful to all the parents who trust me to work with and help develop their kids into the best players they can be! My goal is to provide each player with the opportunity to work hard, challenge themselves to play their very best, and most importantly grow their love for the game. This sport has provided me with so many great opportunities in my life, and having the opportunity to give back to the next generation of players is very fulfilling. All three groups have had a great start to the season, and I look forward to seeing their progress as the year goes on!

Our inaugural choice for this recognition is Alexis Pimental, keeper for Scorpions 2012 ECNL team. Alexis has had a blistering start to the season, to go along with her numerous previous accolades.

"Alexis is a competitor," said Scorpions Goalkeeping Director Darren Burke. "She trains hard and is focused on improving her craft day in and day out.”

SS: What’s your name, town and current club team?

AP: Alexis Pimental from Attleboro, MA. I play on Scorpions girls 2012 ECNL.

SS: When did you start playing soccer?

AP: When I was 3 years old I played town rec because my dad coached the team.

SS: What’s your favorite thing about soccer on the field?

AP: The competition and intensity"

SS: How and when did you decide to specialize on playing goal?

AP: I was 8 years old splitting time in goal and on the field. I made the decision to specialize in goal when I was 10 years old after attending goal keeper training for a year.

SS: Can you tell us your favorite soccer memory (on field or off)?

AP: My first tournament with club soccer we traveled to New Hampshire and went undefeated to win.

SS: What qualities do you have that make you a strong keeper?

AP: My mentality, stamina, strength, fearlessness and having good footwork.

SS: What areas of the game do you need to work on?

AP: Goal kicks and communicating throughout the game.

SS: What’s your favorite team?

AP: Scorpions 2013 girls National team!

With their acceptance to the ECNL national platform, Scorpions SC has taken the opportunity to expand their coaching ranks with new quality additions to helm the ECNL-RL teams. ECNL Director Correy Couch praised the new hires and the direction of the still-new Scorpions ECNL Boys program.

"Scorpions is striving to hire coaches with diverse experience to push the program to new heights," said Coach Correy. "We're adding a twenty-three year coaching veteran and also a twenty-three year-old fresh off his college career," he continued. "The boys and the staff can learn a lot from the different perspectives on the game."

THREE SCORPIONS WIN U17 TITLE

Ava Quintin, Ciara O’Driscoll and Anna Carosi (all on the Scorpions 2009 ECNL-RL coached by Scott Bessette) played in the Puerto Rico International Futsal Championship in San Juan this summer. They played up an age group (2008) went undefeated and won the championship!

Scorpions Spotlight caught up with Ava and Ciara and asked them about their adventure:

SS: Please chart your Scorpions journey.

Ava Quintin: I started Scorpion’s in 2023 on Adam’s ECRL team then in 2024 I moved to Scott’s team. We made it to playoffs and had a good season.

Ciara O’Driscoll: I started on the new ECRL team with Adam in 2023 where we had a great season and I got moved to Scott’s team for the 2024-25 season where we also had a great year. We had good league play and made it to regionals.

SS : How have Scorpions coaches influenced your development?

AQ: Adam (Hughes) helped me get better as a player and made me earn my spot. He believed in me. Scott gave me confidence to try new skills on the field, which allowed me to become a better player.

CO : I think Adam and Scott have both broadened my understanding of the game. I also think Darren’s trainings have helped me gain confidence and better my technique.

SS: How has Coach Scott impacted your soccer life?

AQ: Scott has impacted my soccer life by his positive attitude on and off the field. He recognizes my mistakes and helps me correct them.

CO: Coach Scott has made me feel more heard and has helped me feel more confident in goal. he’s also helped me with my college search.

SS: Did Young Starz have to qualify for the championship? What was the road to Puerto Rico?

CO: We went to Atlantic City in February and made it to the semi finals and that solidified our spot for Puerto Rico. Atlantic City was also a test but I’m glad we went because the competition there was good.

SS: How was your experience abroad? What was your most memorable non-soccer moment?

AQ: I enjoyed going to the beach and to different restaurants. I liked going to the rainforest it is a memory I will never forget.

CO: Our experience was great! The culture is very strong in Puerto Rico and i think the most memorable thing we did was go through the rain forest. It was such a cool thing to see.

SS: Explain the format of the competition.

AQ: The competition was 3 group stage games and the top 2 teams move on to finals. We were the #1 seed because we won all our games

SS: Please recount the championship game.

AQ: We came out confident and ready. We knew they were going to come out hard. They had the home court advance and quadruple the amount of fans cheering them on. We were up 2-0 then in the second half we were tied 2-2. In the end we got the win by getting a goal in the last minute winning the game 3-2. It was so exciting!

CO: We came out strong in the championship game, going up 2-0. We conceded before the half ended and with about 7 minutes left, surf tied up the game at 2-2. We got the ball and started working up the court. Finally, we found our open left allah and she banged it past the keeper.

SS: Please describe your emotions at the final whistle.

AQ: I was so relieved at the final whistle. It felt like all our hard work payed off. It felt great to get first place especially internationally.

SS: What did you think about on the flight home?

AQ: On the flight home I thought about how glad I was to take home the trophy. I also thought about how I was going to miss Puerto Rico’s culture and the people.

CO: On the flight home I was excited to be going home with a trophy but I was also excited to sleep in my own bed!

Scorpions veteran Meg Hughes recently signed a pro deal with Sporting Jax of the USL Super League! Spotlight caught up with Meg and asked her about her first experiences as a professional soccer player.

SS: What’s your earliest soccer memory?

MH: My earliest soccer memory would have to be driving to our local town soccer complex with my mom and siblings on Saturday mornings to go play rec soccer. This was where I found my love for the game and knew I never wanted to stop playing. My mom was the rec director at our town soccer organization, and she was the one who got me hooked on soccer to begin with.

SS: What’s your history with Scorpions?

MH: I joined the scorpions in 7th grade, halfway through the year, as a guest player, not sure if I fully wanted to commit to playing full time. After that half a year I decided I wanted to be on the team full time. I made the NPL team my freshman year of high school and was so excited, but I knew my ultimate goal was to play for the ECNL team. Going into my sophomore year of high school, I went to tryouts and got the call that I had made the ECNL team. I was so excited that I had finally reached my goal. I finished out until my senior year playing for the Scorpions ECNL team.

SS: You were a four-year starter at Providence and Michigan State. How did you balance being a D1 scholarship athlete with academics?

MH: It was tough, not many people know, but I’m dyslexic, so I have always had to work harder than my peers to keep up academically. The structure of being on a sports team helped me to ensure that my time was budgeted between class, studying, treatments, workouts, and practice. I was very fortunate at Providence that they provided tutors and academic advisors whom I would meet with weekly to check in and make sure I was up to date.

SS: Coaches have an amazing influence on kids growing up. Do you have an anecdote of a coach helping or pushing you to ‘level up’ and reach a potential that you didn’t know you had in you?

MH: Every coach that I have had from when I first started soccer until now has pushed me and helped me better myself every day. As I go through my timeline of soccer, I think of my first scorpions coach, Allie (last name), who took a chance on me. I wasn’t that interested in soccer at the time and was not even sure if I wanted to keep playing soccer at such a high level. She let me try out for the team and did not make me make a full decision about whether I even wanted to be fully on the team. She saw the potential in me that many other coaches missed.

SS: You got to play a 5th year due to COVID. Can you talk about your experience at MSU? How did that differ from your experience at Providence?

MH: The biggest difference was probably academic; when I was at Providence, I was a full-time student in classes on campus, and when I was at MSU, I was a grad student with remote classes. The school sizes were also very different. It was really cool to see the Big 10 football games and the campus atmosphere.

SS: Can you give some background on the process of your recruitment?

MH: I knew I wanted to keep playing soccer post-college. Going pro was my ultimate dream and something I strived for every day.

SS: What was your reaction when you got the call? Who did you share the news with first?

MH: For both, I was extremely grateful; the first call, of course, was my mom and dad, they both made many sacrifices for any of this to be possible, and I wanted to share the moment with them. I then told my 3 siblings, who were all extremely excited for me and knew I had been working so hard for this opportunity

SS: What would you tell kids that aspire to play in college or professionally?

MH: I would tell kids that playing in college and professionally has been a dream come true, but there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes, and it takes dedication to your craft to make it.

MONAGHAN NABS CONFERENCE CUP ALL-STAR NOD

Scorpions ECNL player Maeve Monaghan was recently named to the ECNL Conference Cup All-Star Showcase at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in California. Maeve competed on Team New England, and just returned from her trip. Scorpions Spotlight caught up with Maeve and asked her about her experience.

SS: What is your current Scorpions team?

MM: The 2010 ECNL National Team coached by Kevin Mascary

SS: How long have you been with the club? What was your progression?

MM: I just completed my first year with Scorpions SC. I made the switch because I wanted the opportunity to compete in the ECNL at the highest levels. Throughout the year I saw myself grow so much as a player. I learned so much more about the game itself from the coaches. The competition, both in practice with teammates and in ECNL games, is a higher level than I had never experienced, but it motivated me to be a better player.

SS: How have Scorpions coaches influenced your development?

MM: At one of the first few practices my coach put me a centerback, a position i had never played before, and at first I was nervous. But I knew Coach Kevin trusted me there which allowed me to flourish in that position. At every practice I felt like I was learning something new and I think my soccer IQ along with my physical ability has increased a tremendous amount in such a short time. I look forward to learning more from Coach Kevin in the coming season. In addition, many other coaches, like Evan and Nick, have been so supportive of our team at showcases ans playoffs. You can tell the entire organization just wants us to be successful as a team and individually.

SS: What was your reaction to being a Conference Cup selection?

MM: I was very excited, and grateful to be picked for such a prestigious event.

SS: Please describe the All-Star experience. We would like to know the specifics of the camp itself, the games and training, as well as your reaction to playing in that environment.

MM: On the first day after receiving gear, going to our dorm rooms, and getting some food we had a light practice, but even there the intensity was really good. The environment during the games was super competitive, and the speed of play was very fast. Although I played centerback for Scorpions this year, I played a bunch of positions (fullback on both sides, defensive center mid, wing, left side of midfield triangle) during the games that I hadn’t before at this level of competition, but I really enjoyed that.

SS: What was the best part of your experience?

MM: The best part of my experience was meeting and playing with girls from all different clubs. It was really cool being on the same team as girls who I compete against during conference games, and also becoming friends with them. We all spent lots of time in the lounge together as it had fun games like ping pong, soccer tennis, futsbol , FIFA, and then a snack station.

Congratulations to Spotlight's June Coach of the Month, Tim MacDonald! Coach Tim hails from Scorpions Central region, and his teams have had a great run this spring!

Spotlight asked Coach Tim about his 2007 team and coaching history.

Coach Tim:

Our team is led by our amazing and consistent goalscorer, Zhunay Moulton. Season after season she delivers game winning, game tying, and game changing goals and makes the whole team around her unstoppable. She averages over a goal a game each season. She was joined by a FRESHMAN this season up top, Ayla Nelson, playing U19 as a 15yo and she found her confidence and scoring ability with the help of Nay.

Our defense is anchored by Molly Grandazzo, who along with Haylee Baniukewicz and Kate Taylor, have led some of the best defense efforts I've ever seen - averaging less than a goal per game 5 out of the past 6 seasons.

Our midfield this season was dynamic, led by the fearless Molly Hilditch who is going to UMass Boston this season. Kailyn Courtney, Ella Ferguson, Lauren Connor, Addie Heatwole, and Sierra Lacroix completed our midfield and set our team up for success.

We've had girls come and go over the years, but I've been lucky enough to coach these girls for the past 6 years and watch them grow from 11/12 year olds to 17/18 year old girls and it's been a blessing. The core of our team has remained unchanged and our success is due to them, and I'm looking forward to next season and watching them succeed in college and beyond.

Gabriel has had a meteoric rise through the MetroWest, signing last fall with White, quickly moving up to Black, and now most recently he's been promoted to the ECNL-RL team in the fall! All while lighting up the scoreboard with dozens of goals on the year.

SCORPIONS EAST 2012 GIRLS WIN NECSL TITLE

Scorpions East 2012 Black win NECSL Flight 1 Championship on June 7-8 weekend

The Scorpions East 2012 Black finished the season in second place in Flight 1 South. The team had a lopsided loss to Bolts South Shore a month ago.

Scorpions played Flight 1 Metro top seed Maine Lightning Saturday morning. Lightning were an excellent team, big, strong and fast. After being slightly outplayed in the first half Scorpions East adjusted and outplayed Lightning in the second half. Usual center back Scarlett Penders stood strong in goal making every play including a great diving save to keep the score even. Emma Nguyen (Canton) and Grace Nguyen (Braintree) held down the back four to limit scoring chances for Maine. Bailey Dwomoh and Maddie Feldpausch (Braintree) worked and worked in the midfield. With about 7 minutes left Bridget Devin (Marshfield) brilliantly received and quickly passed a ball to Lauren Marcella (East Bridgewater) who deftly received and slipped between two defenders and quickly finished low and hard. The Scorpions defense didn't allow much in the remaining minutes and took the win.

On Sunday morning Scorpions were matched with Flight 1 South top seed Bolts South Shore, the same team that handed them the bad loss last month. Bolts had a perfect spring season going. 8-0-0 with 24 goals for and 2 against. The rematch was a much different game with Scorpions and Bolts each playing well, lots of good passing, receiving and defending. Bolts took advantage of a rare Scorpions lapse in the first half and snuck a floating, dipping shot under the crossbar. 0-1.

With about 6 minutes left Bridget Devin went on a powerful and aggressive run through several Bolts defenders and cleverly rolled one past the onrushing Bolts GK, off the post and in. Inspired, Scorpions pressed on and Bolts dodged conceding a tying goal when a Bailey Dwomoh Scorpions corner dropped right on the goal line and after a wild flurry the refs conferred and decided it didnt go in. Video evidence is inconclusive but seems to support Scorpion players claims that a defender shoveled it out with her hands!

The game then went straight to penalties and Scorpions put a beating on that shootout with Lauren Marcella, Bailey Dwomoh and Reese Mougenel (Canton) burying their shots cleanly while Bolts missed a bunch. The Scorpion team celebrated exuberantly, and well deservedly.

SCORPIONS INVADE RIFC STADIUM OPENER

Over 100 Scorpions families descended on Pawtucket's Centerville Bank Stadium for Rhode Island Football Club's first game in their new home. Families got the full RIFC experience, with some players getting to walk on the field during the opening team introductions, while other teams got to actually play a quick match during halftime and after the game.

"What a tremendous experience for everyone," said Scorpions RI Girls Director Ryan Gray. "Getting the kids out on the field to play and during introductions is something they will remember for the rest of their lives. It's an amazing stadium, and hopefully this is something that Scorpions can do with RIFC for years to come."

MW COACH TOAR WINTER NAMED INTERIM BOYS DIRECTOR

Scorpions MetroWest Coach Toar Winter has been named interim Boys Director for the region following the departure of former Director Ash Hill to King's Hammer SC in Florida.

"I'm honored to take the helm from Ash," said Coach Toar. "I've been a part of the MetroWest boys program since Correy (Couch) started it, and it just keeps growing and growing. MetroWest players are all over our ECNL rosters, and that's a testament to the talent in the region. I will work hard to continue this success."

"The region is in good hands," said Coach Ash. "Coach Toar really cares about MetroWest, he lives here, his boys played here. He coaches four teams. He's a great choice."

MetroWest Director Couch echoed those sentiments.

"Coach Toar exemplifies the type of coach we try to find and develop at Scorpions. He is passionate about the game and gives everything for the kids. I expect the transition to have its bumps but Toar is ready for the challenge."

Coach Toar currently coaches 2013 and 2014 Black on the boys side and 2013 Black and 2015 White on the girls side. "I like being on the field every night and I think it's good to have Cam (Mullins, MW Girls Director) and I out there for consistency and continuity. I'm here because I love coaching and I expect to be on the sidelines for my teams for many years to come."

Scorpions Spotlight is pleased to announce our Coach of the Month for May, Kelsey Dias! Coach Kelsey's teams have had a strong start to the spring season, with her 2010 Girls State Select team winning their Scorpions Invitational bracket.

Spotlight asked Coach Kelsey about her background and coaching history.

Coach Kelsey:

Hi! My name is Kelsey Dias, and I’m the proud coach of the 2010 State Select Girls, 2014 South Black, and 2015 South Black teams with Scorpions Soccer.

I’m from Bristol, RI, and soccer has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve played at every level from town soccer, to club, throughout high school, and even at the collegiate level. The game has shaped so much of who I am, and now, coaching gives me the chance to pass that love and knowledge on to the next generation of players.

I coach because I care. I care about the kids, the game, and the lessons that can be learned through both wins and losses. Being on the field has taught me discipline, teamwork, and passion and now being on the sidelines, my mission is to give back everything I’ve gained from the sport. My focus is on helping young athletes grow; not just in their skills, but in their confidence, leadership, and love for soccer.

The 2014 and 2015 teams have shown incredible growth and determination since the fall season. The 2014 team, completely rebuilt from scratch, began the year without a single win, but through hard work, team chemistry, and a strong commitment to improving, they’ve made a remarkable turnaround and are currently undefeated this spring. The 2015 team, in particular, has become something truly special. Their chemistry on and off the field is one of their greatest strengths. They communicate seamlessly, support one another, and play with a shared understanding that makes them a cohesive unit. Even with the addition of three new players this spring, the transition was smooth. It’s as if they’ve all been playing together for years, a testament to the welcoming environment and strong culture the team has built. The way both teams have developed and come together reflects not just their talent, but their resilience, unity, and drive to succeed.

Our 2010 State Select team had a phenomenal weekend at the Scorpions Invitational, finishing top of their bracket with zero goals conceded!

We kicked off the tournament Friday night under the lights with a commanding 5-0 win over River City Athletics. The energy was incredible and really set the tone. Saturday afternoon, we had a rematch against IFA West Gold, a team that had beaten us 1-0 earlier this spring. This time, we walked away with a 0-0 draw, but the performance was night and day from our last meeting. The girls showed grit, composure, and created multiple scoring chances. I truly believe that match was a turning point for us.

Sunday’s final group stage game was do-or-die. We knew goal differential mattered, and the girls came out determined to control their destiny. With intensity, teamwork, and purpose, they finished the tournament with another dominant 5-0 win this time over Steel United Boston Metro securing our top spot in the bracket and coming out as Champions.

What made this result even more special was knowing where we started. When I first came in, there was a brief adjustment period. The girls were new to me, and I was new to them. It was a slow start as we all figured each other out, built trust, and found our rhythm. But to go from that place of uncertainty to winning our bracket with complete shutouts is a huge testament to their growth and dedication.

After that final game, a parent said something that stuck with me: “It’s crazy to see how much a coach can make a difference on these girls.” That comment spoke louder than words. That is exactly why I do what I do. To be a part of their journey to help unlock their potential, to challenge them, to believe in them more than they believe in themselves. That's the most rewarding part of all.

It’s moments like these when players come together and realize what they’re capable of that make coaching so rewarding. It’s not just about the scoreboard, though those wins are exciting, but it’s more about the growth of the individuals. The quiet one finding her voice, the team learning how to dig deep when it matters most, and the pride they feel when their hard work pays off. Being able to witness that transformation, and knowing you had a part in it, is what makes this journey so special. I’m incredibly proud of these teams and grateful every day to do what I love, helping young athletes become the best versions of themselves, both on and off the field.

2025 Scorpions Invitational Wraps with Record Numbers

The 2025 Scorpions Invitational wrapped up over Easter weekend, with 300 teams representing 27 clubs participating in over 400 games. Championship trophies were awarded in over 40 brackets, with high-level soccer being played throughout the weekend.

"This tournament has been running for over twenty years," said Tournament Director Adam Hughes. "This year we set records for number of teams and number of games played. Almost 300 teams means well over 3500 players participating on the weekend. It takes a lot of coordination and cooperation for an event this large to run well, and I'm proud to say we did a fine job keeping things running smoothly."

Scorpions Director of Coaching Evan Burokas praised the level of play he saw throughout the weekend. "This is a high-quality tournament with strong teams from all over New England and the northeast. The standard of play was quite high up and down the brackets, with some incredible goals and thrilling matches. I'm very pleased we pulled it off again!"

Great weekend for 09s ECNL RL Boys at Jeff Cup in Virginia, undefeated 3-0 against some good competition. We had great individual performances from couple players. Aboubakar Kamara scored 2 goals and 1 assist; our Goalkeeper Landon Cote was amazing making some unbelievable saves especially in the last game to keep us up 2-1; and last Santiago Giraldo our center back MVP in all 3 games winning most of his 50/50 battles and also scored 2 goals. Overall was a great weekend, very happy coach.

SCOTT BESSETTE-- SPOTLIGHT APRIL COACH OF THE MONTH

Scorpions Spotlight is pleased to announce our Coach of the Month for April, Scott Bessette! Coach Scott has had a great run in the early spring tournaments, with the highlight being his 2009 ECNL RL team winning the Northeast Conference Cup!

Spotlight caught up with Coach Scott and asked him about his teams and coaching background.

Coach Scott:

Hi there ! My name is Coach Scott Bessette, I am the proud coach of the 2012, 2010, and 2009 ECNL Regional teams and a goalkeeper coach for Scorpions.

I currently reside in North Kingstown, RI with my wife Leah, my daughters Taylor and Eleanor and my son Oliver. Taylor and Eleanor are both proudly Scorpions in our ECNL program.

Growing up, I loved playing the game and was obsessed with the ball. I made the transition to be a full time goalkeeper in my teens and never looked back. I was lucky enough to have amazing team coaches and experts in goalkeeper training as well. From a pretty early age I knew I wanted to give back to the game that gave me so much.

This year I have taken on additional teams and responsibilities with the club and I couldn’t be more grateful to our directors and to the players and families I get to work with everyday.

My 2012 ECNL-R team had a great fall, as a brand new team we spent the fall developing their understanding of the game, working to develop as a team unit and competing at the highest levels. The team finished the fall just outside of the playoff qualifying picture with 4 wins, 3 Losses and 1 tie but with much to prove. The group won their final tournament of the season at the South Shore Select November Cup. They have started the spring season strong with 2 wins and one loss, the goal is to get into the playoffs by the end of the season.

The 2010 ECNL-R team began the late fall and winter on an impressive run. At the NEFC Thanksgiving Showcase they finished top in their bracket with 3 wins, scoring 12 goals and conceding only 4. The team continued their success at the Disney College Showcase in Orlando Florida in January. They not only won their bracket but qualified for the final, unfortunately losing 1-0 in a very competitive, down to the last whistle game. Wins vs Stars White and World Class FC in the Conference Cup qualified the team for the Semifinals in Islip, NY. The team performed very well but lost to the eventual champions CFC 1-0 in the semifinal. This team is very talented, and will contend for a regional playoff spot by the end of the season.

My 2009 Regional team has played against some of the very best this fall, we have competed in 5 college showcases thus far at NEFC, ECRL-Kansas City, SUSA, ECRL- Florida and The Jefferson Cup. The team is hard working, focused on development, and is self-sacrificial. We had a very successful Conference Cup, coming out as CHAMPIONS ! It was an exhibition of their character as a group. We lost our first game vs Stars White 3-2 and knew we were on the outside looking in. A huge 5-0 against World Class and some results in the other game going our way had us qualify for the semifinal. A win in PK’s against CFC and a 1-0 win vs Stars Blue had us lift the Conference Cup trophy, automatically qualifying us for The East Regional playoffs this summer.

My central focus is on the holistic development of players. With a passion for the game and a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed both on and off the field, I strive to cultivate well-rounded athletes who excel in every aspect of their game—technical, tactical, physical, and mental. I seek to blend my professional experience as a licensed counselor with a player-centered approach. Recognizing that every player is unique, I tailor my coaching to suit individual strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring that each player grows not just as a soccer player, but as a person. I believe that success in soccer is about much more than just technical skills; it's about fostering a mindset that thrives under pressure, learning how to make smart decisions, and building a team-first mentality. Every drill, every practice, and every match are seen as opportunities to improve not only in the physical sense but also in mental resilience and teamwork.

2009 ECNL RL GIRLS WIN NE CONFERENCE CUP

I am truly happy to report that the Scorpions 2009 Regional Team, won the 2024/25 Conference Cup this weekend in Islip, New York at the SUSA Complex. The tournament placed teams in 3 different brackets with the winner from each and the best 2nd place team advancing to the semifinals and finals . Our first game we were paired up against FC Stars White in Lancaster, MA on December 15th. A difficult start to the game saw our team down 3-0 at half time, but we fought back to make it 3-2 late with a chance for a draw. Ultimately, we lost 3-2, that day we learned a lot about the group, our goals for the season and what it would take to advance. In our next group stage game we faced World Class FC at home, knowing we had to win and win big if we stood a chance to advance. The girls came into the game with the right mentality, and took the game to our opponents. Ella McDonald recorded 4 goals, Laila Rosen added a 5th to finish 5-0. The team had their best game to date, including a shut out by goalkeepers Ciara O’Driscoll, and Lucy Stanford and the entire defensive unit. With other results also going in our favor we qualified as the top team in our bracket advancing to the next round of the playoffs.

All of this resilience was created by a strong preseason schedule that brought together this team of talented players. From November leading into this Championship weekend the team played 4 College Showcases (NEFC, ECRL-Kansas City, SUSA, and ECRL-Florida. This preseason we had time to develop the relationships on and off the pitch, learned the tactical approaches of a new coach and built upon competitive trainings.

On Saturday, in the Semifinal we matched up against CFC. Our opponent scored first on a second opportunity from a corner. The team responded well and 5 minutes later Ella McDonald scored from a shot 18 yards out to even the game 1-1. CFC went back ahead nearing the end of the 2nd half on a cross and finish in transition. At halftime adjustments were made and the team prepared for a battle to the final whistle. A hallmark of this team is our ability to respond to challenges, and just 5 minutes into the second half, Sophea Souza scored from long range to level the game 2-2. Both teams had chances to win the match in regular time but ultimately the game went into penalty shots. Ava Quintin, Emery Carr, Gabriella Berardi, and Sophia Horton all converted from the spot and won in PK’s 4-3.

Sunday, we faced our derby local rivals FC Stars Blue in the final. The wind played a massive role in the final as it affected the flight and weight of all passes. In the first half we absorbed the wind and pressure from our opponents, playing smartly by building out of the back, playing into feet and then finding runners in behind. We created many fantastic opportunities for our forwards and the team bought into a strong defensive mentality going into halftime 0-0. In the second half we had much of the ball and were able to be in the attacking third for a good portion of the half. We created many opportunities and 7 minutes into the second half we scored from a corner. Service in from Laila Rosen, touched on by Anna Baker Dimock and ultimately scored by Ella McDonald. We absorbed chances from our opponent and remained calm, taking the 1-0 scoreline to the final whistle.

Excited for what the league season will bring for this group, and look forward to competing at the ECNL Regional Playoffs East June 27th - July 1st in Greensboro, NC.

Scorpions Futsal League Champions !

SCORPIONS SC FUTSAL LEAGUE WRAPS

The Scorpions Soccer Club Futsal League wrapped its second season last week with Tournament Sunday. 34 teams and 140 players participated this year, with the younger teams at CCRI Lincoln and the older group at Wheaton College. There was a high level of play in each league, with good, spirited competition up and down the schedule.

Scorpions 2010 ECNL Boys took the High School Premiership over Scorpions 2009 ECNL Boys. The High School Championship final saw the Mustangs defeat Scorpions 2009-11 Girls to take home the title.

The 2012/13 Premiership saw the Scorpions 2012 Boys ECNL team defeat the 2013 Boys Pre-ECNL Cherries 5-4 in the final. The 2012/2013 Championship final pitted Scorpions 2013 MW Boys Black versus their counterpart White team. Black jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Alex Llordi led a furious comeback with five second half goals that fell just short for a 6-5 final.

The 2014/15 Premiership final saw the Scorpions 2015 MW Boys defeat CFC 7-4 to secure the title. The 2014/15 Championship division saw Scorpions 2015 MW Girls defeat Scorpions 2015 South Girls 2-1 to earn their medals.

GROWTH FROM WITHIN: CLUB PROMOTIONS PROVE PLAYER PATH

Scorpions SC is proud of its record developing players. Our training program gives young players core principles that apply at every competitive level. Many players work hard at applying these building blocks in their game, and we acknowledge this effort with promotions-- over 150 of them last season!

It's a proven player pathway to the highest levels of high school, college and professional ball. Scorpions prides ourselves on hiring the best coaches that follow our Training Curriculum, to ensure that all levels of play are getting similar instruction with common terms and language. This allows players that excel at one level to seamlessly integrate into higher levels as they earn promotions.

"Recruiting good, established players is obviously a huge part of club soccer," said Scorpions President Nick Rugnetta. "But it's also our responsibility to nurture and develop players at every skill level. It's really special when players make the leap from teal to white to black or from State Select to ECNL. Players work harder when there's a carrot in front of them. If they put in the time and effort, that will earn them shot at the next level. It's those players that become the backbone of the club."

The NorthEast Futsal Tournament is played in Atlantic City, New Jersey and is considered the biggest Futsal Tournament in The World. It brings players from different countries at all age groups.

My team, FC Flair, had players from different countries including Colombia, Cape Verde, Portugal and Brazil. I have been going to this futsal regional for 13 years now and this was the first time that my team won the Championship. We made a few semifinals and finals in the past couple years but we were never able to win it.

I also had privilege to watch three of our Scorpions players at this Tournament playing for RI Futsal. Addi Eaton did very well and was the leading scorer for her team. Alexis Pimentel, one of our goalkeepers, did amazing in goal and made the All-star team. Isabelle Dutheil was just a joy to watch, playing up three age groups, doing rainbow flicks to kids three years older than her. She was just a pleasure to watch.

Girls 2011 ECNL standout Savaughna Anderson recently participated in the US Soccer Girls U14 East Regional Minicamp. Sav's performance earned her a spot at the next level as one of only 40 girls to make the cut. Spotlight sat down with Sav to chat about her tremendous opportunity.

SS: What’s your name, town and current club team?

SA: Savaughna (Sav) Anderson, Plymouth, Scorpions SC ECNL National

SS: When did you start playing soccer?

SA: I started playing soccer at 3yo with my town's recreation department, Tots Soccer.

SS: How long have you been a Scorpion?

SA: Since winter 2024, one full year.

SS: What's your favorite part of Scorpions Trainings / Culture?

SA: They push me to up my intensity, speed, skill, and compete at every training.

SS: How do you feel you have grown as a player and person at the club?

SA: I feel like my love for soccer has grown. I'm building my work ethic by running on my own and doing technical touches everyday. As a player I like to be considered one of the leaders on my team and I try to lead by example.

SS: Explain how you got involved with the US Youth National Team program and where you are at in the process.

SA: My team and I played well during a competitive league match in Long Island. A few weeks later Coach Nick notified myself, Quinn and Natalie that we had been selected for an ID camp with other top players from the Northeast. At the ID camp my teammates and I went in with a positive attitude, hoping to perform at a high level and support each other. During the scrimmage I scored 2 goals, one a header from a corner kick and the other an own goal from the 18 on the right side. The next step of the process is heading down to Georgia in March for the next ID clinic. I cannot wait!

SS: What was the previous tryout experiences like?

SA: It was a fun experience competing against and playing with the best. I loved training with elite players and being challenged throughout the 3 hour clinic.

SS: What are the next steps?

SA: Continue working hard! Continue with my daily touches, strength & conditioning workouts, speed & agility, and private technical workouts. I am working with my trainer to eat clean and make food choices that help fuel my body. Some I like and others not so much, but I can tell it’s working. I am also excited to continue training with the 2010's as I join their team. I know working with this team will help improve my decision making and growth as a player. This has all been so much fun for me, putting in the extra work and getting to see the results. It's awesome and I am grateful for the opportunity.

SS: What are you most excited about?

SAA: Being another step closer to representing my country, family, Club and town as a Team USA U14 rostered player.

Scorpions ECNL coach Kevin Mascary has been honored as the Scorpions Coach of the Month for March 2025, a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication to player development. Coach Kevin’s teams have showcased exceptional performance throughout the winter season, highlighted by his 2010 ECNL Girls team achieving a flawless 3-0 record at the prestigious SUSA Showcase last weekend. This accolade celebrates his consistent success in fostering talent and driving competitive excellence within the Scorpions Soccer Club.

“I embarked on my coaching journey in 2010 and have been fortunate to spend many rewarding years coaching within the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL), one of the most competitive youth soccer platforms in the country. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding players as they sharpen their skills, unlock their potential, and pursue their dreams—both on and off the field. For me, the greatest joy of coaching lies in witnessing the growth of my players and the triumphs of our teams. This season, my 2008 and 2010 girls’ teams have exemplified this, delivering remarkable results that reflect their commitment and teamwork.

This fall and winter, my ’08 and ’10 squads have been nearly unstoppable, losing just one competitive match combined across the entire season. The 2008 team has been particularly dominant defensively, conceding only a single goal in National Event play—a testament to their discipline, focus, and relentless effort. Meanwhile, the 2010 team’s perfect run at the SUSA Showcase demonstrates their ability to rise to the occasion against top-tier competition. These achievements are a direct reflection of the hard work, resilience, and passion these young athletes bring to every practice and game.

As we transition into the spring season, I’m incredibly excited to see how both teams continue to evolve. With their talent, determination, and the strong team culture we’ve built, I have no doubt they’ll achieve even greater heights in the months ahead.”

SCORPIONS ALUM AVERY SNEAD SIGNS PROFESSIONAL DEAL IN NORWAY

Former Scorpions 2001 ECNL player Avery Snead signed her first professional contract last week with Norwegian pro club FK Bodo Glimt.

Avery transferred from Providence and finished her senior season at Indiana University this fall. Spotlight sat down with Avery to hear all about her latest stop on her soccer journey.

SS: What’s your earliest soccer memory?

AS: My earliest soccer memory I can think of is when my first ever soccer game got cancelled and I was absolutely devastated. I remember being so beyond excited to start the season (at five years old) at the local Wrentham Youth Soccer league. We went out and bought my first cleats, shin guards, water bottle and all the necessities. I could hardly sleep the night before. When I woke up early the next morning to pouring rain and my parents telling me the game was cancelled, I remember being heartbroken that I would have to wait a full week to get to play my first game. I don’t remember much about those early years playing, but this recollection sticks out to me. Looking back, it was pretty obvious how much soccer was going to mean to me for the rest of my life.

SS: What’s your history with Scorpions?

AS: I joined Scorpions and the ECNL going into my sophomore year of high school when DA came into effect and prohibited club players from playing soccer for their high schools. My friend Chloe Layne had been on the team for a few years and had great things to say, so I decided to make the switch from GA to ECNL in order to continue playing for my high school (King Philip Regional High), as well as play at a high level and develop as a player with Scorpions. Evan Burokas took over as coach for my age group and from then on I played three full seasons at the club. I also played for the Scorpion’s UWS summer league team for two consecutive summers in 2021 and 2022 with Evan.

SS: Can you please detail your Scorpions experience? Tell us about your coaches, level of play, etc. How did Scorpions support your development?

AS: My years growing and learning with Scorpions and especially under Evan were crucial to both my success in college and the opportunities that are now afforded to me as I continue my soccer career playing professionally in Norway. The players around me had similar goals and aspirations for their future soccer careers, so the competitiveness that was fostered in every training session allowed me to improve and mature as a player and enhanced my competitive desire. The ECNL was an exceptional league not only to get recognized by college coaches, but also to play against high level players that bolstered my growth on the field. The comradery on and off the field was also very special amongst the players over the years. All those moments away on tournaments, before and after games, and everything in between made me want to show up everyday to be around the amazing people I was with. I am still close to a lot of those girls today and am grateful Scorpions was able to bring us all together to form those friendships.

Evan was another critical role during my development at Scorpions. He made training challenging, but very fun and enjoyable to the point where we could be very serious at times and then all dying of laughter together the next minute. This balance strengthened my love for the game while also helping me learn technical and tactical aspects that have helped me in my career. Even after my time with Scorpions was over, he set up and coached the UWS summer league team where I was able to stay in shape and prepare for my upcoming college seasons, helped me in my transfer process from Providence to Indiana, let my Providence teammates and I join some training sessions to stay sharp for our 5th year seasons, and has always been in my corner. I am forever grateful to Evan and Scorpions for taking me in and not only preparing me for the next level, but also treating me like family and fostering my love for soccer.

SS: You were a four-year starter at Providence and IU. How did you balance being a D1 scholarship athlete with academics?

AS: Balancing academics and athletics as a D1 athlete wasn’t easy, but it was definitely rewarding. I prioritized creating a structured schedule and ensured I dedicated time to both training and studies, especially in season where the days were long and I was missing class a lot for travel. Staying disciplined and managing my time effectively were key, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of the people around me- my teammates, coaches, and professors. They made the process much more manageable. The grind taught me so much about hard work and accountability, and I’m grateful for every challenge because I know it’s prepared me for the real world and my next chapter in Norway.

SS: Coaches have an amazing influence on kids growing up. Do you have an anecdote of a coach helping or pushing you to ‘level up’ and reach a potential that you didn’t know you had in you?

AS: I am thankful to have had many coaches along the way that have been transformative in my career and helped me in more ways than one. However, when I think of a specific anecdote of someone pushing me to reach a new level of potential, I think of two specific stories: one with my Mom and one with my Dad.

My Mom was my coach for town soccer from kindergarten to 6th grade. She didn’t know much about soccer, but she was smart enough to decipher that whoever won the 50/50 battles and had the ball the majority of the time probably would score more goals and win more games. That’s when she and my other coach (my friend Makayla Griffin’s mom Dyanne) came up with the game “Animal Ball.” At the end of practice, they would throw the ball in the air with all of us ready to pounce and yell “animal ball!” And we would all have to fight for the ball out of the air and win it. It was such a funny but competitive game and was probably overly aggressive at the time, but I will always remember it and how it translated on the field to us winning 50/50 battles. It was such a fun game and interesting way to get us to compete, but the name stuck for many years to come. To this day I still think of the phrase whenever I am going up for a header inside of the box.

My Dad was also a big believer that aggression on the field was key to success. He always said that even when things were not going my way or I wasn’t playing well, working hard and being aggressive were the two things I could control to get back into a rhythm. I remember I was going through a spell of a few bad games in 5th grade, and I was getting really frustrated and playing scared. My Dad told me to harness that frustration and joked that I need to be aggressive enough to get a yellow card. One game when he was on the sidelines he yelled “YELLOWBIRD!” and smiled. I laughed and knew he meant to start getting aggressive, and it was time to start playing harder and more assertive. I started getting in on tackles, being more forceful, and playing more like myself. From then on, my Dad would say that on the sidelines, partially as a joke to ease my nerves, and also has a reminder to not be scared and play more aggressive and confident. The term really stuck. I have written “Yellowbird” with a sharpie on my wrist for every college game I have ever played in. It serves as a reminder to not take the opportunity to compete for granted and to leave it all out there. Funny enough, despite this term I never received one yellow card during my entire college career.

SS: You got to play a 5th year due to COVID. Can you talk about your experience at Indiana? How did that differ from your experience at Providence?

AS: Playing a fifth year at Indiana was an incredible experience that differed in ways from my time at Providence, but was also very similar. Indiana was part of the Big Ten, so I got to compete against high-level teams which challenged me as a player and pushed me to grow even more. The environment was extremely competitive, and being at a larger school brought a different academic and social dynamic. Many of my family members including my parents went to IU so that also made it an extra special experience. At Providence, I made most of my lifelong friends through my teammates and created soccer memories that I’ll always cherish. Making two NCAA tournaments and playing with my best friends was something I will always cherish. Both places were special in their own way and served me differently as a person and player. At Providence I found a tight-knit community, and at Indiana I embraced a bigger place with new opportunities. In both places my teammates made all the difference, and I feel so lucky to have experienced having a solid support system twice. It wasn’t just about soccer but also the relationships and the growth that came with it.

SS: Can you give some background on the process of your recruitment? What was your reaction when you got the call? Who did you share the news with first?

AS: It was always a dream of mine to play professional soccer, but it didn’t seem attainable until half way through my college career when I was having some success and felt like I was really developing as a player and loving the game more than I ever had. I had always been open to playing somewhere in Europe because I love to travel and I always felt that living in a foreign country and getting to travel a bit on any off time would be an amazing and life changing experience. When I signed with my agency, Inspired XI, my agent Gabriel reached out to a lot of clubs in Europe to see where my position was needed, what league would be a good fit for me, and where I would be open going to. With the elimination of the NWSL draft this year as well as many female players now wanting to play professionally, it was definitely a crazy time to find a contract, so it was a lot of back and forth with different clubs until coming to a final contract. I had been in contact with a few clubs during December and then Gabriel told me a club in Northern Norway (Bodø/Glimt) was interested. I hopped on a call with them the next day and was extremely impressed by the head coach, Cato, and everything he had to say about his vision for the team next year and where I fit into that. Despite my initial nerves about how far away and how north I would be headed, I was still buzzing with excitement about the opportunity. I was on a ski trip in Montana with my family when this all happened and it was very exciting to have a promising call like that with a club that I was very interested in. I did all the research on Bodø and talked to a St. John’s alum who plays there currently, and after that I was sold. The club sent me my final contract a day after my 23rd birthday and it was such a reliving and proud moment for my family and I. It felt like all of my hours of hard work and every high and low throughout my career was all worth it.

SS: What would you tell kids that aspire to play in college or professionally?

AS: The biggest thing I would say to kids that aspire to play in college or professionally would be to stay grounded in why you started playing the game in the first place because passion will keep you motivated through the tough times. It’s easy to get caught up in the grind of it all and the challenging moments that come naturally with soccer, but remembering why you fell in love with it will help you stay in the moment and appreciate the game itself, the lessons you learn, and the people you meet along the way. The process of getting better can be mentally and physically draining, but focusing on the joy of improvement and the small victories along the way will remind you why the journey is worth it.

Addi was recognized by the club for her outstanding performances throughout this past fall, but also during her selection in representing the U12 US National Futsal team throughout the year.

In Futsal, due to the limited space and speed of the game, your technical and tactical understanding must be at a high level. Therefore it comes as no surprise that Addi Eaton of the 2013 ECNL team succeeds on both the court and the field with her ability ! Her skill on the courts has earned her a place on the U12 US National Futsal team which she has been fortunate and proud to be apart of the past few seasons.

My coaching career started approximately 11 years ago when my children decided to play the beautiful sport, we call Futbol. The journey started at Pawtucket Storm (town soccer) where I coached for 5 years and started to create a 2008 boys team. After a couple of years of hard work, I felt the boys could compete at a much higher level and I decided to join Explosion FC (premier club). After a short year, my entire team moved over to Bruno FC, where we spent the majority of our competitive years, up until the merger with Scorpions SC. During the past 11 years my 2008 boys have competed at many levels. Those levels have been at the regional level in NECSL, EDP level and now the prestigious ECNL level. If it weren’t for the boys who trusted my process, I would have not been able to teach the beautiful art called futbol.

For me, when it comes to futbol, it is not just a sport. It is a platform for development. This happens on and off the field. I have witnessed so much growth from each of the members of my team. I have also witnessed the kids make lifelong friends outside of their own communities. This beautiful sport brings multiple personalities and races together, all working towards one goal “WINNING”. Although, It has not ever been all about the game, my role as coach has provided me a platform where I can be a mentor and an influence for kids to think about themselves holistically and recognize ways their dedication and commitment goes way beyond what they put out on the field. In our team we also value good sportsmanship; the importance of being an overall good human. I am grateful that futbol has given me this opportunity. Thank you, Scorpions SC for the platform to continue to develop my team and my continued growth as a coach.

MEGAN JAKUBICKA (2008 ECNL) CALLED UP TO SLOVAKIAN U17 NATIONAL TEAM

2008 Girls ECNL standout Megan Jakubicka is going international! Last week, Megan got the call to play for Slovakia's U17 National team. Spotlight got the chance to ask her a few questions about her amazing opportunity

SS: Detail your Scorpions journey. How long have you been with the club, which teams have you played on and which coaches have you played for?

MJ: This is my second year at Scorpions but I guest played with the team for a season before joining. I’ve been playing with the 2008 Scorpion ECNL team both years, but last year I unfortunately could only play for a couple of games as I tore my ACL and had surgery in February. Kevin has been my coach while I’ve been a part of the club, but while I was guest playing I was able to play under Coach Nick.

SS: How did you get involved with the Slovakian national team?

MJ: Both my parents are from Slovakia and when we would go and visit family there we would briefly talk about the national team as my dad played soccer in Slovakia for as long as he was there. My dad reached out to Slovakian team’s coach, sending highlights and games of me playing, which then led to the coaches inviting me to attend the camp.

SS: How did you feel when you got the call to play U17?

MJ: I am extremely excited to be presented with the opportunity to attend the National Slovakian camp again. Last year I was also selected and I was looking forward to going, had plane tickets and everything lined up, but while I was playing at the ODP Interregional event in Florida I tore my ACL, a week before I was supposed to leave. But this year I’m so happy to be back and grateful to be given this chance again, almost exactly a year after my surgery. I’m slowly getting into the form I was before and am excited to learn from this unique experience.

SS: What does the call up entail? Will you be traveling?

MJ: Being called up involves attending a week in a half camp in Turkey (due to the warmer weather there) in February where I will train with the other girls as the coaches will be evaluating us.

SS: You are at the beginning of an exciting journey. Where would you like that journey to take you?

MJ: Hopefully I will be picked for the main roster after this camp and will have the opportunity to play in the qualifying games against other U17 National teams. I am also excited to gain valuable experiences from this as it will be a huge change from my current soccer environment that I will be able to learn from and make me a better player.

GIRLS ECNL

I t was a great weekend in Florida for our 2009, 2008, and 06/07 ECNL and ECNL RL teams competing at the ECNL FL Showcases. The teams were exposed to top competition and tested themselves against other top clubs from across the country.

The 2008 ECNL RL, 2008 South ECNL RL, and 06/07 ECNL RL teams played in Sanford, FL at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Playing teams from Florida, South Carolina, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Tennessee, and Missouri.

With the 2009 ECNL, 2008 ECNL, and 06/07 ECNL teams playing in Lakewood Ranch, FL at the Premier Soccer Complex. Playing teams from Washington, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, and Texas.

Over the weekend, the girls were able to play in front of 175+ different college programs at the D1, D2, and D3 levels! With most of those colleges watching the girls play 2-3x over the course of the Showcases. Both events had sidelines full of college coaches at the games and provided an unmatched opportunity for the players to maximize their prospective college recruiting journeys.

Finished 2-1

Highlights were a solid team effort finishing in a 4-1 win over Michigan Hawks ECNL RL and a thrilling 5-4 win against South Carolina United ECNL RL scoring the winner in the final minute.

Top performers:

Tess Sullivan - outside back scored the game winner against South Carolina ECNL RL.

Elise Modracek - center back scored a smashing header in the 4-1 W against Michigan Hawks ECNL RL and kept the back line organized with her leadership and communication.

Madison Taylor - winger led the front line with 3 goals on the weekend and was dynamic all weekend in attack.

2008 South ECNL RL

Highlights were a dominant performance resulting in a hard fought 1-0 win over Tampa Bay United ECNL RL, with Jacqueline Manning scoring the winner late in the second half.

Top performers:

Madison Sterne - defender led the back line with solid tackling and positional play all weekend.

Jessica Keane - provided excellent consistency and stability in the back line for the team in Florida.

Jacqueline Manning - led the front line and scored the game winner in the teams 1-0 W against Tampa Bay United ECNL RL.

06/07 ECNL RL

Highlights were a great game and team effort earning a 4-1 win over Wilmington Hammerheads ECNL RL, punctuated by a hat trick from Kendra Santiago.

Top performers:

Bella Wen - midfielder was incredibly reliable all weekend in possession/build up play and in her defensive duties in transition.

Priscilla Miranda - center back helped keep the team organized and did very well winning her individual duels.

Kendra Santiago - forward scored a hat trick against Wilmington Hammerheads ECNL RL and was a threat all weekend in the attack.

2009 ECNL

Highlights were a come back 2-2 Draw with Ohio Elite ECNL that was an excellent team effort to twice come back from being down.

Top performers:

Layla Venancio - center back/midfielder played big minutes all weekend and was solid in her defensive duties.

Donnelle Balunos - center midfielder provided consistent defending and helped keep possession in transition all weekend.

Analise Pinto - midfielder/forward was a main catalyst for the teams attack and posing a threat over the weekend.

Sydney Tremba - forward showed incredible work rate and intensity, leading the forward line with her pressing and off the ball runs.

2008 ECNL

Finished 3-0, undefeated weekend

Highlights were a 7-0 win over PDA South ECNL, 6-0 win over Pittsburgh Riverhounds ECNL, and a 3-0 win over Concorde Fire ECNL. The team finished in first place out of 82 teams in the 2008 age group!

Top performers:

Kambryl Armstrong - forward scored 6 goals on the weekend and provided another 3 assists to lead the front line through the middle.

Anya Tansil - winger scored 2 goals and had another 3 assists playing wide in the front line and provided excellent creativity all weekend.

Olivia Iafrate - goalkeeper kept 3 clean sheets on the weekend and led the back line with her communication and distribution in build up play.

Sidney Heavey - winger scored 6 goals on the weekend and defensively was incredibly effective in her pressing and transition play.

Molly Tufts - centerback was amazing and very consistent all weekend in her 1v1 defending and winning countless aerial duels.

Meghan Jakubicka - attacking midfielder provided an excellent connection between the lines in possession and attacking transitions and was very creative playing with her back to goal.

06/07 ECNL

Finished 2-0-1, undefeated weekend

Highlights were a 5-1 win over Pacific Northwest ECNL, a 6-5 shootout win over FC Pride ECNL, and a last minute comeback 2-2 draw against Richmond United ECNL.

Kelly O Connor - winger scored 3 goals on the weekend including multiple header goals to secure victories and spark the comeback in their final game.

Mollyanna McGuire - center forward showed good versatility playing in the attacking midfield, while also scoring goals when playing in the front line.

Noelle Gorham - midfielder provided excellent link up play between the defensive and forward lines and was fantastic in transition play, doing a little bit of everything all weekend.

Autumn Simoon - forward was an excellent link to allow the team to get into good attacking positions. Her leadership and communication were crucial to the teams success on the weekend.

Alivia Kelly Signs Pro in New Zealand

Scorpions veteran Alivia Kelly has been preparing her whole life for this. Countless hours of practice. Hundreds of games. Who knows how many touches on the ball... millions? All leading to the call of her dreams-- a long-distance call with the chance to play professional soccer.

Alivia signed last week with the Wellington Phoenix of Australia's Ninja A-League. The New Zealand club needs help in their defensive backfield, and Alivia is ready to fill that void.

“It’s definitely not something I had on my bingo card for this month,” Kelly said. “But I’m very excited and I can’t wait to meet everyone and get started."

Alivia was a cornerstone of the Scorpions 2001 ECNL team under club director Evan Burokas as the starting center back, but her Scorpions connection goes farther back than that. She's been a Scorpion since playing U7 for director Fred Marks way back in 2007. The club connection even extended into her high school play at Thayer Academy, where she hit the director trifecta, playing for Nick Rugnetta.

“We could not be happier for Alivia,” said Burokas. “It’s a testament to her work ethic and desire. She has earned everything she’s gotten every step of the way.”

Spotlight had the opportunity to ask Alivia some questions from across the globe.

SS: What’s your earliest soccer memory?

AK: My earliest soccer memory is my first coed soccer team coached by my parents and a team filled with my neighbors/best friends. All I remember is my team being super competitive at the ripe age of 6. I remember taking immense pride in keeping up with the boys on each team and ultimately is probably part of the reason I am a natural defender.

SS: What’s your history with Scorpions?

AK: I started at the club at U7 and remained a scorpion up until I departed to college at U18/U19, a crazy stat if you actually look into it. I remember playing for my town team at the old Scorpions Fieldhouse in Pembroke when Fred Marks came up to me and asked if I had any interest in joining the club. At the time, I was just a kid who loved to play and begged my parents to let me sign up. From there I had great pride in being a scorpion and played for Evan Burokas for my final years with a group of girls that I have remained close with since.

SS: You were a scholar All-American at UNH. How did you make time for studies as a D1 scholarship athlete?

AK: I have taken pride in my studies throughout my career because my parents have always placed an emphasis on being multifaceted from a young age. I graduated with a BS in Neuroscience and Behavior on a pre-med track and hope to become a PA after playing professionally. I feel incredibly lucky that I was able to be honored as a two time Scholar All American aside some of the best players in college soccer. This was a bittersweet moment in my career as I was able to reminisce on all the experiences that led me there.

AK: I was fortunate to play for a variety of coaches throughout my time at the club who all helped me grow my game in different ways. The dynamic on my team when I was a u9-u12 was integral to my development. Fred Marks did a great job at teaching us the most important parts of the game (first touch and passing) while also slipping in stories about life that helped us develop as both people and players. He often told us about how he wanted to be the lead guitarist in Pearl Jam but never wanted to put in the work. We often still laugh about some of these moments but they left us with lessons learned.

SS: What was your reaction when you got the call? Who did you share the news with first?

AK: When my agent called me and said I had a possible opportunity in the A league, I was pretty shocked initially. I had just come off a college season and wasn’t anticipating the immediate interest. But after speaking with my family about it, it was pretty clear that this was the move I wanted to make. An opportunity to grow my game in another country for my rookie season was very appealing. After speaking with some people about the club both internally and externally it was for sure a no brainer. I have been adjusting well to life in New Zealand and can’t wait to get started on the pitch!

Congratulations to Caleb Pongratz, Scorpions December Coach of the Month!

Coach Caleb's teams in the MetroWest had strong showings this fall, with both his Boys 2014 White and 2013 Teal enjoying winning records, earning double-digit points in the process. His 2013 entry into the IFA Tournament went undefeated with two draws and a 3-0 win against Boston Vigor, ranked #30 in MA.

We asked Coach Caleb to tell us about himself and his teams this fall:

I am a 23-year-old from Hanover, Massachusetts, who currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts.

“When I’m playing soccer, my primary position is left winger, center-attacking midfield or as a striker. I am a very adept right-footed goalscorer & am a versatile playmaker.

This past fall season has proven to be a successful one. Coming into the group and not knowing any of the players, I had my work cut out for me as my main focus and goal was to learn the players, learn the system, and immediately look to add to and improve the development of each team that I worked with.

My 2014 White team had a solid year in the Flight 2 South White, where we finished midtable with a 3W-3L-1D record. This group is a fun one. With a trio & a pair of kids on the team with the same name, the start was quite confusing, however, the results started to click and development of the players was quickly shown overtime. With our 3 losses coming by just 1 goal, they showed up and battled everytime they stepped on the field. Everyone in this group has shown progress on every aspect of the game and I could not be more proud of how their fall season concluded.

My 2013 Teal team had a fantastic year in the Flight 3 MetroWest, where we finished top 3 in the league with a 5W-2L-1D record. This group is technically sound. With a fantastic defensive showing, allowing just 8 goals on the year, they showcased every aspect of the Scorpion way. Offensively, the group was exciting and always tended to express themselves going forward. It was extremely fun to assist to their growth but also to watch them play. I can confidently say that every single player has shown noticeable growth.

My fall season came to an end this past weekend with a combination roster with six members from the 2013 Teal, six from the 2013 White & two members of my 2014 White team to take place in the IFA Tournament. The group battled to two well fought 1-1 against a local club and the #13 ranked team in Maine, where both games came down to the wire. The tournament concluded with our group facing a Flight 1 #30 ranked team in Massachusetts, where the boys battled to a 3-0 victory, to finish the tournament with a 1W-2D-0L record. Unfortunately, we missed out on the final, however, the battle and overall fight from this group showcased that the boys fight not only for me, but for themselves & for the club. This was probably my favorite result all season.

Overall, my focus and goal as a coach is not only to teach these kids how to play and improve in soccer, but to also add a positive impact in the players’ lives. I want to add to their overall growth as a person, as a teammate, as a player, and as a friend. This will be done by teaching them skills that will add to their development on and off the field. My plan is adding life skills, discipline and much much more. I want to create an environment that is supportive. An environment where they can learn about the game, enjoy it, and reach their goals.

Growing up, I remember every single coach I played for... My goal is to leave the same positive impact or a better impact than the coaches left on me as a player.

That’s how every coach should be.”

Earns Invite to National Selection Program

Seventeen-year-old Kelly O’Connor, a standout member of the Scorpions 2007 ECNL national team, is making headlines with her summer achievements. Kelly has been a part of the Scorpions family for over five years and has consistently played on Scorpions’ top ECNL teams.

After her stellar performances throughout 2023 and 2024, she was offered a spot to represent New England at the ECNL Girls Conference Cup in Chula Vista, California. As one of 120 top rising U16-U18 players in the league, Kelly flew across the country to represent New England.

During her time in California, Kelly scored three goals and provided one assist in her attacking role, placing her as the leading goal scorer on her team. In her interview, she shared, “I stood out on offense because of my aggressiveness and how I translated that onto the field.” She emphasized that this mindset is a crucial element of her success as an athlete.

Kelly acknowledges the competitive ECNL play and training environments that prepared her for this elite placement. Reflecting on her experiences with Scorpions, Kelly expressed, “The coaches, the trainings, the games… I feel that every moment I have had at Scorpions was geared towards helping me become the best version of myself. They are looking out for me as a person, not just a player.”

She also highlighted the high level of competition at the Conference Cup, stating, “This experience showed me just how many talented players there are in this league and in this game. It certainly will motivate me in the future because if you’re not putting in the effort, someone else is.”

Kelly’s teammates at Scorpions have had a significant impact on her growth. “All my teammates at Scorpions have had a significant impact on my growth because they always bring energy, always compete,” she said. “I think playing for Scorpions and then just overall playing in the ECNL has prepared me for it because there’s always gonna be intense players that put a lot of aggressiveness when defending you, so I feel like I was used to that part when I went into there because I was so used to it during the ECNL games.”

Kelly also shared some advice for other young athletes: “I would say just remember to have fun too because when you’re thinking about the game more as a job it can get kind of exhausting and you want to remember what you’re here for. You’re here because you love this sport and you don’t want to lose any of that spark when you’re playing. Just remember to have fun because even though we’re all putting in the work and it’s really hard, the reward is during the games, having those great moments with your teammates and you don’t want to lose that.”

Kelly’s journey is a shining example of dedication, passion, and the importance of a supportive team environment. We are incredibly proud of Kelly and look forward to seeing her continue to excel both on and off the field.

Scorpions Soccer Club Joins Boys ECNL Regional League

for 2024/2025 Season

Scorpions Soccer Club is honored to announce that it has been accepted into the Boys ECNL Regional League for the 2024/2025 Season ! This marks a monumental day for our club as we welcome the opportunity and platforms provided to continue to provide a unique experience for our boys players.

About the ECNL

The ECNL represents the epitome of excellence in youth soccer, for both boys and girls . The league and its clubs, players, coaches, and everyone involved constantly strive to “Raise the Game” for the future . The ECNL provides a structured and organized platform for youth players to develop their soccer skills . The league’s commitment to player development is evident in its comprehensive programs and resources .

Club vs Club Competition

Joining the ECNL means that Scorpions Soccer Club will be competing against top teams in the Northeast . This level of competition will challenge and inspire the players, fostering their growth and development.

Established Showcases

The ECNL is known for its established showcases that attract unmatched attendance of NCAA college scouts at national events . These events provide a unique opportunity for players to showcase their skills and get noticed by college recruiters .

Proven Pathway

The ECNL has a proven pathway for improving player development by increasing player demands on game day . In fact, 90% of ECNL / ECNL Regional League players go on to play in college . In 2023 alone, over 1600 NCAA college coaches attended ECNL Regional League events .

Internal Features for Members

Scorpions Soccer Club offers a range of internal features for its members . These include professional licensed coaches, all team trainings and games, league and referee fees, player registration and insurance, and a PlayMetrics platform . The club also organizes a college informational night and college workshops, and provides a collegiate coordinator/liaison .

Matt Mones, Scorpions SC Rhode Island DOC, said of the move, “The ECNL pathway will provide our boys teams with a tremendous opportunity to regularly compete against some of the top clubs in the country and in front of coaches from the best college programs in the United States. We have been looking for a structure and league that is focused on player development at all levels, as well as, increasing college opportunities for our high school age players. Scorpions SC Rhode Island will be the only soccer club in the state that offers this player pathway for boys. As members in the ECNL Boys Regional League-Northeast, our teams will be eligible to compete for a national championship as well as in college showcases, where players are identified as potential recruits by college coaches in attendance.

"This is what the club and players have always aimed at", said Scorpions Director of Coaching Evan Burokas. "We have a vision, and we took a very important step forward towards that with the addition of the Boys ECNL platform. This opportunity for our players is simply not possible without the leadership and dedication by the incredible staff we have within the club who have drove this vision into reality. This player pathway will not only increase our ability to showcase our college bound players to more schools, but to also test and develop our youngest players alongside the best in the region / country."

The League also stated that "The ECNL is thrilled to announce a wave of promotions and additions across the country to the ECNL Regional League for the 2024-25 season, as well as the creation and rebranding of a number of ECNL Regional Leagues.

This growth further solidifies the national footprint of the ECNL RL with more quality clubs across the country that increase the competitive quality and depth of the RL and a presence in multiple new markets to provide opportunity for more players. Overall, the ECNL RL offers all clubs fantastic local and regional competition, access to ECNL Regional League Events, a tremendous post-season pathway, and the opportunity to earn promotion to the ECNL over time.

“These new clubs and leagues reflect a larger and more mobile pathway for clubs all over the country,” said ECNL Associate Commissioner Chris Leahey. “Clubs are being promoted from several of US Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues based on their performances, and clubs are being added to the ECNL Regional League platform from other leagues. Scorpions 2007 ECNL Regional team advances National Final !

Scorpions 2007 ECNL Regional team has advanced to the ECNL Regional National Final in Richmond, VA this Monday, July 17!

After advancing to the Northeast Regional Championships and winning the Northeast Title against local conference rivals CFC, Scorpions 07 ECNL Regional booked a ticket to the National Finals in Richmond, VA this weekend.

First game vs San Diego Surf ECNL Regional resulted in an empathic 4-0 win before beating a near perfect team in FC Dallas 3-1 in the final four to reach the National Championship. Head Coach and Scorpions College Director Andre Reis said both games were ‘ a total team effort ’.

“ We wouldn’t have advanced to the final without the contributions of every single player on the team. Defensively the team has been stellar, only conceding 1 goal in two games. Offensively the team has been extremely clinical and has finished when the opportunity has risen. Set pieces have been key to both wins, and it is a part of the game that generally gets overlooked at the youth level. ”

In the 4-0 win vs San Diego Surf, the first two goals came off of setpieces, the first being an excellent corner by Kaitlyn Coutu and the second being off of a free kick deep in the opponent’s defensive third. Emma Gavin, the tall and dominant center back for the team, got on the end of both and headed them home. The other two goals came off of two amazing shots from outside of the box, one from the teams attacking midfielder Abby Costa and the other from winger Brenda Murphy to finish the game off.

Against FC Dallas, set pieces were key again, even more so than the first game as all three goals came directly off of set pieces. The first coming off of a long throw finished by Abby Costa, the second off of a corner kick served in by Abby Costa and headed in by Lila Wilcox, and the third was scored directly from the corner by Abby Costa.

A team oriented approach has always been what has guided this team to success over the course of the year, but different players and different groups within the team have stepped up and answered the call when called upon.

“In goal, Janiya has been lights out making every save look easy, dealing with crosses and catching basically everything that has been hit at her. The back line had so much to deal with and they didn't put a foot wrong. The midfield has been excellent on the defensive end as well, while in possession they have had the ability to be very efficient in breaking lines and creating goal scoring opportunities for the forwards. The forward line has put in a ton of work on both sides of the ball. Defensively, dropping into the midfield when needed and offensively they have been able to keep the opponents defense honest by always being ready to get in behind in transition. Kendra Santiago has the ability up front to create something out of nothing by always being on the last defender and using her strength to hold up the ball or stretch the game herself.”

The opponents were not the only obstacle in the way for the Scorpions team as weather and playing conditions were brutally unforgiving throughout the weekend as coach Andre reflected on the team's ability to adapt to the conditions.

“Playing in these conditions against two hot weather climate teams has definitely been a challenge but the girls bought in and left it all on the field. The season kicked off in late November in the snow and now we're playing in the blistering sun eight months later, the girls haven’t batted an eyelash and have pushed through all external factors. I’m extremely proud of them for showing that type of grit.”

As the team prepares for the National Final on Monday morning, Coach Andre reflects on the opportunity they have in front of them and how he feels the girls will approach the game.

“Heading into the final we will be facing another strong opponent in Missouri Rush. I know that the effort, desire and fight our girls have shown in post season play will be there again on Monday. We are 5-0 in Postseason play, scoring 12 goals and conceding just 2, it has truly been a remarkable run. We need to control the controllables and try to make the least amount of mistakes as possible when dealing with the excitement of a championship game. We don’t want to change who we are and what we do as I want the girls to enjoy it. They have earned the right to be one of two remaining teams in the entire country and I couldn’t be any more proud of what they have done. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, last year we didn’t even make the Northeast playoffs and here we are in the National finals a yea r later. It’s exciting and Monday's game is something we are all looking forward to!”

SCORPIONS SOUTH SC GRANTED ADDITIONAL ACCESS INTO SCORPIONS ECNL REGIONAL LEAGUE !

We are very happy to announce that we are expanding our club's access within the Girls ECNL platform with our acceptance into the newly created Northeast ECNL Regional League! The Girls ECNL has created this league for the 2023-24 season and beyond.

Scorpions South ECNL RL will provide an incredible opportunity for more driven and talented players to participate and compete within the ECNL RL. This program will train out of the Taunton/Rehoboth area and will house teams for girls in the U12/13-U19 age groups.

Our teams competing in this new platform will be called Scorpions South SC and will consist of a full offering of teams in the U13-U19 age groups. These ECNL Regional League teams will be in addition to our current Scorpions ECNL and Scorpions ECNL Regional teams competing in the ECNL New England League platforms.
